The Potala Palace, pearl on the roof ridge of the world, is situated on the Red Hill in the northwest of Lhasa, provincial capital of Tibet. Originally, this architectural wonder was intended as a welcoming gift from Sontzen Gampo, founder of the Tibetan regime, to his bride, Princess Wencheng, who travelled a long way from the territory of Tang to Tibet. After its renovation in the 17th century, it has become residence to Dalai and has witnessed all the major political ceremonies of Tibet ever since the reign of the fifth Dalai. Also, in the Potala Palace there enshrined the Stupa Halls of Dalai and an extensive collection of priceless treasures. The Potala Palace is without doubt the glamorous centre of Tibet in terms of politics, religion, culture and art.

Built on a mountain slope, the Potala Palace is an awe-inspiring construction of solid granite walls, glittering gilded roof and golden spires dotted with Buddhist pennants and streamers. In clear weather, the holy Potala Palace shines in a mixture of red, white and gold. Apart from its exterior magnificence, the Potala Palace is reputed for its exquisite layout. The entire complex consists mainly of the White Palace and the Red Palace. The thirteen-storey main building measures 115.7 metres high and is divided into Chamber Palace, Buddha Hall, Stupa Hall, Monk Residence. The White Palace, namely residence to Dalai, stretches from the east to the west of the palace site and contains extremely ornate halls and corridors of diverse sizes and shapes. The walls are decorated with elaborate Buddhist paintings; most of them are compositions of prominent artists. The Red Palace lies in the middle of the Potala Palace. In it there is an amazing quantity of statues of Buddhas, Sontzen Gampo, Princess Wencheng and Princess Chizun of Nepal, amounting to several thousand pieces all together. In addition, there enshrined the Stupa Halls of the Dalais adorned with glittering jewels, gold and wall painting of more than 2,500 square metres. The Potala Palace, occupying an area of 100,000 square metres with thousands of richly furnished houses arranged in an orderly fashion, demonstrates the skilfulness and innovation of Tibetan architects.

The Potala Palace has a store of delicate priceless Buddhist treasures and relics. The Stupa Tower of the fifth Dalai Lama is 14.85 metres high and dwarfs all the other towers in the palace. It is sheathed with a layer of gold foil studded with different kinds of jewels and precious stones. The construction of the tower cost a total of 5,500 kilograms of gold. The lesser towers are also richly decorated with gold and jewels, which renders the Potala Palace a dazzling world.

For hundreds of years, the Potala Palace has been held a sacred realm for both the Buddhists and the worldly people. On Buddhist festivals, thousands of pious Tibetan Buddhists from all nationalities set out on their pilgrimage journey toward the Potala Palace and gather around the palace gate in worship. The boisterous sight offers you an impressive view of the power and charm of the third largest religion of the world.

The Potala Palace Stories:

Sontzen Gampo and Princess Wencheng

During the 7th century, the Tibetan region was under the reign of the Tubo Dynasty. The king, Sontzen Gampo, was a diligent and kind ruler. Due to his efforts, the Tubo Dynasty grew more powerful than ever. In order to set up a good relationship with the Tang Dynasty and introduce advanced culture and technology into the Tibetan area, Sontzen Gampo decided to ask for Princess Wencheng’s hand in marriage. When his envoy, Lu Dongzan, arrived with generous betrothal gifts in Chang An, capital of Tang, he discovered that several other neighbouring nations had also sent out envoys to propose to the intelligent and beautiful Princess. The emperor of Tang thought of a solution: he put three questions to all the envoys, and the one who could solve all of them would win the princess for his king. So Lu joined the competition with the other envoys. At last he alone solved all the questions. The questions and his clever solutions are:

1. There were ten cylinder logs, and each had two ends of the same size. Tell which end was the bottom and which was the top.

Lu put the logs in a pool. Because the density of the bottom end is larger than that of the top end, Lu was able to tell the bottom from the top.

2. There was a small jade stone with a hole running twisted through it. Pull a thread through the hole.

All the other envoys were squinting and fumbling with the thread when Lu applied some honey to one end of the hole and tied the thread to the waist of an ant. He then placed the ant at the other end of the hole. The ant, attracted by the smell of honey, quickly went into the tiny hole and came out on the other side. The thread slipped through with the ant.

3. One hundred mares and one hundred foals were mixed together. Tell which mare gave birth to which foal

The other envoys tried to match them according to their colours or looks and failed. Lu locked up all the foals separately from the mares for one night and put them together again the next day. Every foal rushed to its mother to feed, and Lu was able to tell which mare gave birth to which foal.

As Lu had solved all the three questions, the Emperor decided to put forward an extra question: Lu had to pick out the real princess from among 500 girls with their heads veiled. Fortunately, Lu had learned that the princess preferred a particular kind of perfume which attracts the bees. So he carried some bees with him and let them go. The bees all flew towards one girl. Lu knew immediately that she was the real princess.

The emperor was very impressed with the resourcefulness of Lu. He consented to Sontzen Gampo’s request and married Princess Wencheng to the Tubo King. Sontzen Gampo received the happy news from Lu, and ordered to build 999 halls to welcome the princess. This is how the Potala Palace came into being. Now you can still find the painting recording the story of the proposal on the wall of the Potala Palace.

Different from other lakes in Tibet, Ba Songcuo Lake (also called “Cuogao Lake”, which means “three cliffs and three lakes” in Tibetan language) is completely surrounded by the lush green virgin forest. Just as its name, Ba Songcuo Lake is green, a kind of light green that looks like jade without any impurities. The lake water is so limpid that people can see fishes move about in groups two or three meters under the lake surface. Green hills all around look like black pigments used by women in ancient times to paint their eyebrows and there exists accumulated snow that does’t melt all the year round on the mountain peak. Snow mountains by the lakeside and those reflect on the lake surface badger with each other, stretch long and unbroken, quite magnificent! What is hard to come by is that few people visit here now, so Ba Songcuo Lake is completely cut off from the outside world.

Best time to visit Ba Songcuo Lake

The best season in Ba Songcuo Lake is autumn, when the sky is high and the weather is fine. From the lake shore to mountain ridge, woods all look dyed all over the mountains and plains. The various colors and the tranquil environment provide a high time for photograph hobbyists to “murder” their roll films. However, the exuberant trees by the lake shore make it difficult for them to take pictures of the Zhaxi Isle in the middle of the lake. Therefore, these photograph hobbyists have to climb toward the mountain forest at the back of Ba Songcuo holiday village, then they can have the opportunity to look down from the height and take pictures of Zhaxi Isle, which looks like a precious stone inlaid in the green lake. Apart from the sight, most subject matters of shooting by the lakeside focus on small sights, which need photographers to have exceptional insight to discover.

Surrounded by beautiful flowers and trees, there are many garden-like quiet villas. As long as you live in a room facing a mountain, every morning when you wake up, you will see the snow mountains, which is a great pleasure. Not far from the bank of the lake, trees are standing upright, swaying and relaxing. The garden is quiet in the afternoon and the sun is warm. Walking along the roads in the forests, you will feel that you are in a lotus land. The red and tall azaleas are in blossom. If you are in the season of wild strawberry, you can pick up some. You can also spend most of your time staring blankly or wandering around. Sitting in the yard filled with red or purple fresh flowers, drinking a cup of milk tea, reading a book or having a nap, you can spend your whole afternoon in such an easy and pleasant way until the snow mountains in your eyes are fired by the setting sun.

Ba Songcuo Lake is also called Cuogao Lake, which means “green water” in Tibetan language. The lake locates at an altitude of over 3700 meters with an area of about six thousand mu (1mu=0.0667 hectares). Ba Songcuo Lake is in the steep valley of Bahe River, which is over 50 kilometers away from Bu Jiangda County of Linzhi. It is a famous sacred lake of Mongolian Lamaism.

In 1994, Ba Songcuo Lake is judged to be national scenic site, at the same time concluded into world’s travelling spot by World Tourism Organization. In 2000, it is judged to be national AAAA level scenic site and in 2001 it is entitled National Forestry Park by national Ministry of Forestry. The lake is so clear that you can see the bottom. Surrounded by the snow mountains, it is like a piece of jade in the canyon, tranquil and magnificent. Compared with the other three sacred lakes, Ba Songcuo Lake has totally different view and features, so there is no reason for not going when you are in Linzhi.

Ba Songcuo scenic site brings snow mountains, lakes, forests, waterfalls, pastures, historical relics and ancient temples into one. The views are quite different during the four seasons of a year. With all kinds of wild rare plants, it is really the heaven on the earth. We can see the reflections of the snow mountains around on the limpid water. From time to time, Delphi seabirds and white cranes sail across the water and fishes swim in clean water, which forms an interesting picture to watch. When spring comes, the flowers around the lake all bloom and the reflections of snow mountains can be seen on the waters, extremely beautiful. In autumn, the mountains are all red and the woods look dyed. Blue sky, sunshine refracted by the maple leaves and the reflections on the green lake, the view is too beautiful to be absorbed all at once. About 100 meters away from the bank, there is an island named “Zhaxi Island”. It is said the island is a “hollow island”, which means that the island is totally floating on the water instead of connected with the bottom. Tough it is a legend, it is still mysterious. When you land on the island, you can have a try to see whether it is hollow or not.

As result of its unique location, Ba Songcuo Lake is different from other lakes. In the morning, when the mild wind blows genteelly with the flavor of the grass and the dew on the grass has not disappeared, the lake, covered my mist, shines with blue light with a beam of sunlight on it. Ba Songcuo Lake in the morning is like a shy girl in the morning glory, vivid and interesting. Sometimes, ducks and seabirds fly upon it, bringing vivid language to the quiet and silent lake. It is the language that you can never experience in other three sacred lakes in Tibet, which is in a class by itself and matchless.

Ba Songcuo Lake Story

  1. Story of Lotus Sheng Buddha

There is a huge stone of 150 square meters to the northwest of the lake. There is a hole in the center of the stone, which is wide enough for one person to go through. Legend has that people whoever go through the hole can get rid of pain and sickness. Not far from here, there is “Lotus Sheng Moksha Cave” on the beach and on the west bank of lake is “place where Gesal King controlling arrow”. It will be joking if someone asks where Asia is, the same to where China is, for Asia, especially China has been well known by people all over the world. In the past decades, China has made great changes beyond your imagination. In 2008, Beijing, the capital of China, held the 29th Olympic Game; in 2010, Shanghai, the largest port city of China, saw the World Exposition. Those are reasons why China Tours are so popular among tourists, and of course, there are many more attractions in China, such as the historical sites, ancient buildings, landscapes, and more. So, why not book China Flights and explore yourself.

Actually, in my point of view, it is unwise for new comers to travel in a strange country by themselves. The reasons are followed: firstly, you don’t have the experience when you come to a new palace; such experiences include how to get to the popular attractions, how the local people live look like, how to avoid the language barriers, and so on. Secondly, generally speaking, the more time you spend on making your itinerary, the more enjoyable your travel is. However, travelers usually do not have enough time, energy and experience to plan their itinerary. As a result, an excellent travel agency is needed. In the following articles, I will recommend you a famous China travel agency, which is also famous abroad and it is named China Youth Travel Service (CYTS), the website is www.chinatraveldepot.com.

The specialties of CYTS are the hotels deals, the flights deals, the tour packages and deals. By this way, you can save your time and money, for there is more discount information which is provided by all kinds of hotels, and airlines. It is easier for you to find out more reasonable prices. And I will show you an example for more understanding about the travel agency. Pretending that you decide to travel to Tibet in the southwest of China. Firstly, an air ticket is needed; on the Flights Section you will find the flights information, choose the day you will departure, and the type of your seat, then the prices will be bound up, select it and by now you have reserved the tickets, all other unnecessary procedures are omitted which cost your less energy and cash. Secondly, before your departure, you had better book a hotel, on one hand, there will be a discount for prime reservation; on the other hand, in order to avoid the hotels are full and no empty rooms during the peak tourist season. Furthermore, to make your travel itinerary more detail and specific, that means you need to arrange your time proper, to assure you have enough time to visit as well as have enough time to relax; therefore, the tour package will be a good choice, for the tour guide will arrange your itinerary more reasonable, and she or he can assure your safety from any other unexpected happenings. By the way, the hot attractions in Tibet is the Potala Palace, which is now on the list of Chinese national key protected cultural relics, also is the most valuable storehouse in Tibet. It is a huge treasure house for materials and articles of Tibetan history, religion, culture and arts. The Palace is widely known for the precious sculptures, murals, scripture, Buddha figures, murals, antiques, and religious jewelry treasured up, they are of great cultural and artistic value. In 1994, the Potala Palace was declared the United Nations World Cultural Heritage site. And being here, you can enjoy the different local culture and feel the life style of local people. So, why not Travel to Tibet and explore yourself?

Now, here is a brief introduction to Tibet—it is known as the Roof of the World. For centuries the mysterious Buddhist holy place has attracted millions of tourists, and Tibet is locked away in its mountain fastness of Himalaya, as a result, Tibetan people have exercised a unique hold on the imagination of the west. For adventurers and traders it was a land of treasure and riches. Tibet is without doubt one of the most remarkable places to visit in China, even in Asia. It offers fabulous monastery sights, breathtaking high-altitude treks, and stunning views of the world’s highest mountains and some of the nicest people you will ever meet. As the capital city of Tibet, Lhasa is rightly one of the most featured and dreamt-about cities in the world. Its impressive heritage of over a thousand years of cultural and spiritual history has helped to create the romantic and mysterious Tibetan religion.

One of the Must-See place in Tibet is the Potala Palace, which is now on the list of Chinese national key protected cultural relics. It is the most valuable storehouse in Tibet, having a huge treasure house for materials and articles of Tibetan history, religion, culture and arts. The Palace is widely known for the precious sculptures, murals, scripture, Buddha figures, murals, antiques, and religious jewelry treasured up, they are of great cultural and artistic value.

The Jokhang Temple(大昭寺) is constructed thousands years ago. Now the temple has been enlarged many times over the centuries and now also houses statues of King Songtsan Gambo and his two famous foreign brides. However, the original statue of Jowo Sakyamuni Buddha that Princess Wen Cheng brought from Chang’ an over 1300 years ago is definitely its most sacred and famous possession, and is perhaps the most venerated religious artifact in all of Tibet.

Travel to Tibet can be adventurous, and full of excitement. Traveling equals to the opportunities to learn something new and some thing you are interested in and I hope you can have a brief understanding about travels in China.

Many foreign visitors who want to china travel for the first time, the most attractive spot coming to their minds is the holy Tibet. In their opinion, it is a palace where full of adventures and they will have a different view about China. So, Travel to Tibet, and find your fun here.

Tibet is one of minorities of China; people who live here have their own customs about clothes and food, and so do the other aspects. Tibet is located in the southwest of China; the average height of Tibet is thousands of meters. The general religion here is Buddhism, so there are lots of buildings which were built for Buddhism. The most famous one is the Potala Palace. Potala, the former political and religious center of Tibet, is now on the list of Chinese national key protected cultural relics. It is the most valuable storehouse in Tibet. Also, it is a huge treasure house for materials and articles of Tibetan history, religion, culture and arts. The Palace is widely known for the precious sculptures, murals, scripture, Buddha figures, murals, antiques, and religious jewelry treasured up, they are of great cultural and artistic value. In 1994, the Potala Palace was declared the United Nations World Cultural Heritage site. Perched upon the Marpo Ri Hill, 130 meters above the Lhasa valley, it is the greatest monumental structure in Tibet.

There are many other attractions in Tibet. For example: the lakes. Lake Yamdrok, one of the four holy lakes of the Tibetan people, situated on the way from Lhasa to Gyangtze which is the old route from Lhasa to Shigatse. The bus travels up a 4794M high mountain through rugged muddy road before reaching the lake, the journey is really breathtaking since the bus drives right on the edge of the cliff. But all these will be rewarded when you suddenly find yourself on the top of the mountain and the stunningly beautiful blue lake under the other side of the peak.

What’s more, there are so many restaurants in Lhasa that it is possible to eat in a different place every night! The food includes Tibetan cuisine, Sichuan cuisine and western style dishes. Some hotel restaurants even provide Nepalese and Indian food. It’s worth noting that Sichuan dishes in Tibet are more expensive than in other parts of China. Tourist restaurants also serve delicacies and almost every hotel has western food. Most of the restaurants can be found clustered around the Jokhang Temple and Barkhor Street, the center of Lhasa City, so that travelers can find places to eat and drink within easy reach.

Tibetan cuisine is quite distinct from that of its neighbors, since only a few crops (not including rice) grow at such high altitude and cold climate. The most important crop is barley. Dough made from barley flour, called tsampa, is the staple food of Tibet. This is either rolled into noodles or made into steamed dumplings called momos. Meat dishes are likely to be yak, goat, or mutton, often dried, or cooked into a spicy stew with potatoes. Mustard seed is cultivated in Tibet, and therefore features heavily in its cuisine. Yak yoghurt, butter and cheese are frequently eaten, and well-prepared yoghurt is considered something of a prestige item. In larger Tibetan towns and cities many restaurants now serve Sichuan-style Chinese food. Western imports and fusion dishes, such as fried yak and chips, are also popular. Nevertheless many small restaurants serving traditional Tibetan dishes persist in both cities and the countryside.

More attentions is needed, for the unpleasant climate and the high mountains, you’d better travel in group or have somebody who have the experience here. And I hope that China Tours will give you another different view.
