The quite busy and crowded 7-day “golden week” holiday just ended yesterday. You cannot imagine the difficulty to buy railway, bus tickets or China Hotels, if you have never been travelling during this hot season. One of my friends tried to buy a railway ticket for independent Guangzhou Tours a week before the “golden week”. But she failed undoubtedly and turned to scalpers by adding 100 RMB to original prices of only 300 RMB. The top news every day in this week were always that tickets of most long-distance lines, such as to Beijing, Shanghai, Hangzhou, had been sold out. Moreover, the regular 20% discount of flights was not available during this week. So if you happened to travel during these Chinese “long weekends”, the first suggestion would be choosing a travel service rather than backpackers.

The first benefit is obvious and described above: Cheap Price. Besides the expensive tickets for not joining a travel service, all the other expenses are also not cheap for individual tourist. Especially if your destination is Shanghai, where the tourism is booming this year because of 2010 World Expo, you are likely to end up with full-priced rooms even in hotels of 2 stars or below. The worst situation might be the same as the experience of another friend who was backing to China during the off-season period. Because of the flights delay, he was unable to catch the transferring flight and had to stay in Shanghai for one night. He tried at least 10 hotels to get a room, but unfortunately all the rooms had been booked and most of these were ordered by travel agencies. Therefore, he had to go for a rather expensive room which was three times expensive than usual rooms. As travel services often book a stack of rooms or tickets together and have long-term relationships with various hotels and airlines, they can easily get a lower price even in the “black-out” periods, like the “Golden Week”.

The second advantage which is my favorite is the Professional Guides. Being a backpacker means you need to collect much information, so that you could understand and explore local cultures, stories and histories behind the sights. But sometimes backpackers are too busy or lazy, like me, to do “homework” before setting off. As a result, they might miss some interesting places or spots. What is even worse, they may be trapped by some local business operators who are aiming to extort money from tourists. However, if you are in the group of travel agencies, you will receive reminders of these common tricks or traps and introductions of those historical stories, local cultures on road. Though you may also “sneak” into a tourist group and pretend to be a member to get introductions at one attraction spot.

The last, hope not the least, is unusual Featured Tour Packages. Thanks to the tense competitions among travel services, many new featured tour packages are coming up these years. You may be wondering to drive by yourself and travel in China, but you are worrying that you are not familiar with the road conditions and maps in China. Now the self-driving tour packages are provided by some travel agencies. They will arrange the groups, facilities, guides on the road which could release you from those worries. Also, you can ask them to rent a proper car in a local rental house. Otherwise you may not be able to get a car rented after your arrival. Moreover, the agritainment tourist programs are becoming popular in China. You can hunt crabs, fishes or chickens and pick up fresh fruit and vegetables on your own or with your family. No need to worry about language obstacles, since the travel services have arranged everything for you. You can have a taste of farmers’ lives of Chinese style.

3. Accommodation Choice

As we all know, Shanghai is the modern city both in China and in the World. So, the price of accommodation is very expensive. Now, I will tell you some tips about how to choose the accommodation. 4. Arrange Your Dinner Well

I suggest you have your breakfast in your hotel because many hotels offer free breakfast buffet. And you can have your lunch in the vicinity of tourist attractions. Shanghai’s traffic is very convenient. You can choose subway, bus and taxi when you travel in Shanghai. I recommend you choose subway first for it is cheap and on time. It is also very convenient by bus but it is very slowly, especially in rush hour. By the way, you had better not take taxi for the price is very expensive.

When people are talking about China Tours, the most common thoughts would be the Great Wall, Forbidden City, Beijing, or Shanghai. It is reasonable for visitors to think of this way, as China is one of the Four Great Ancient Civilization. Undoubtedly, being the capital of China for more than 800 years, Beijing Tours are the necessary part of your trip. Here, what you will experience is the culture and structures since Ming Dynasty (1368-1644 A.D.). Shanghai, being one of the major international cities in the world, is also an essential station of a trip to China. But are you tired of those travel packages or recommendations following the same pattern? Are you curious about which places that local Chinese people would choose for their vacations? If so, this article will answer you these questions.

First, what else can be expected in suburb of Beijing? There are Jing Xi Shi Ba Tan (京西十八潭) on the west, White River (白河) Drift on the north and Prague Farm on the south.

The Jing Xi Shi Ba Tan (京西十八潭) is an rare natural scenic spot in northern China. The rivers within this place are running all four seasons. It is famous for the deep valley, peculiar stones, fancy water and striking flowers. Local people enjoying views here are more because of its unusual silence and natural scenes. You can also taste the country food and fruits which are not provided in the cities. The springs are very clear, cool and ready to drink. Especially it has the mulberry pick-up festivals every June. The direction is easy to follow: take the line 1 of subway, get off at the Ping Guo Park station and transfer to the route 929 of bus.

Are you a fan of canoe? Then you may like the White River Drift, which is less tough but has more fun. The heights of mountains besides the rivers here are from 400 to 1000 meters, so the selection of drift routs is multiple. The White River Drift is usually having two people on the same boat, but several boats are launching together. Therefore all of you guys can play in the water together and have competitions for almost 2 hours. Besides the drift, there are also ideal cross-country route with 22 kilometers built in 1940s and various climbing cliffs. The direction is to get off at Dong Zhi Men subway station, then take bus route 916 to arrive at Huai Rou bus station.

It is not the Prague of Czech you are familiar with. There is another Prague, which is a farm with all kinds of flowers, such as lavender, sunflower, and daisy, just in the southern suburb of Beijing. The ticket is 40 RMB per person with 2 kilogram fresh fruit pick-up. Also you can go camping and have campfire at night. But the best season is the summer time when the flowers are blooming, and the weather is proper for camping. The best direction is not by public transportation, but by driving. Take the 13 ramp exit the Jing-Shen high way and drive about 5 minutes till you see the advertisement of the farm.

Are there any interesting places around Shanghai? Definitely yes! All the buildings and structures in Wu Zhen were built in Ming Dynasty (1368-1644 A.D.) or Qing Dynasty (1616-1912 A.D.). It is the “Venice” of traditionalChinese style as it is the traditional “Water Town” in Southern China. It is lying on the Grand Canal was firstly constructed Sui Dynasty (581-618 A.D.) and prolonged in Yuan Dynasty (1206-1368 A.D.) by the descendants of Genghis Khan. Besides the beautiful and ancient buildings and views on water, there are many museums as well. For instance, the wood carving museum, footbinding museum, hundred beds museum exhibited the lives of Chinese in Ming and Qing Dynasties. When you are tired of the modern and international city—Shanghai, you can escape from Shanghai and take the bus for about 90 minutes to arrive this silent but traditional small “water” town.
