The total area of the Xiangba Island is about 33 hectares, with a forest that covers more than 80 percents of it. The forest consists of camphor trees, peach trees, grapefruit trees and bushes. During spring and summer, the island is verdant and is dotted with fragrant flowers, while in the autumn and winter, it is richly decorated with red leaves. Thanks to its isolate location, the island is free from industrial pollutions, and retains it original natural beauty.

On the Xiangba Island, there are theatrical stages for ethnic customs performance, an exhibition of artworks, resting and camping areas where you can have dinner. In August 2000, a famous art magazine invited hundreds of artists to this small island and created artworks there. These artworks were later the main part of the exhibition. The Guanyan Scenic Spot (literally “the champion of the karst caves”) is located at the middle reaches of the Lijiang River in Caoping Hui Autonomous Township 29 kilometres to the south of the City of Guilin in the Guangxi Province. It is a Sate AAAA-class tourist spot and the only developed scenic spot in the Jinghua Reaches of the Lijiang River. Famous for its natural idyllic scenery and unique local culture, the Guanyan Scenic Spot is called “the Pearl of the Lijiang River” and “the Zero Distance Scenic Spot”. This area was first developed in 1992 and now includes the excursion areas of the Underground River Zone, the Xiangba Island, electricity-powered rail train, gravity-powered rail train, electricity-powered tourist train, rope crossings, Yunwu Mountain Villa, Guanyan Restaurant and other tourist items and facilities. The total investment adds up to hundreds of millions yuan. The Guanyan Scenic Spot covers an area of more than 400 hectares. Inside the cave there is the largest sight-seeing and holiday resort of Guilin featuring the underground river. It also serves as a sanatorium park, a conference centre and recreational resort. The Guanyan Cave is 12 kilometres long and the tourist trip covers three kilometres. It is a magnificent place with numerous colourful stalactites and stalagmites of various shapes and sizes. You can choose to take a tour around the cave either on foot, by moving walkway, by sight-seeing elevator, by rail train or by wooden boat on the underground river. The tour will last about 90 minutes.

Since the old days, the tremendous beauty of Guanyan has overwhelmed large numbers of writers and poets who have composed many literary works in its praise. Mo Xiufu of the Tang Dynasty, Wang Zhenggong of the Song Dynasty, Cai Wen and Xu Xiake of the Ming Dynasty and Zha Shenxing of the Qing Dynasty have all visited Guanyan and written articles or poems about the place. Guanyan is the only place where you can enjoy all the four well-known aspects of the landscape of Guilin—the mountains, the rivers, the caves and the rocks. Guanyan offers more means of sight-seeing than any other cave in the world, and its electricity-powered-railcar track the longest of all. The Guanyan Scenic Spot of the Lijiang River has been a magnet for tourists around the world. Now nearly 600 thousand tourists visit the place every year and the number is still on the rise.

The inside of the Guanyan Cave is as big as a hall. The broad structure allows lights to enter it so that the cave is rather bright inside. The cave consists of three rock mass structures. It is divided into 5 smaller caves, forming a network of caves inside. The upper two structures lie above the water table, and on their ceilings there are stalactites of various shapes and sizes. The low structures, however, are partly submerged in underground water. The stream that flows through this structure is the Underground River. It is more than 700 meters long. Thanks to the efforts of local government, the stream remains clear. Since water force is the major reason for the formation of stalactites, the stalactite shapes in this humid structure are the most miraculous of all. Some of them look like beautiful flowers, some like clouds, and others like animals.

Because of the deep and covered position, visiting the Underground River was no picnic at a time. The local government noticed this when they were planning to convert the Guanyan Cave into a popular tourist spot in early 1990s. With the help of modern technology, they built sight-seeing elevators, moving walkways and rail trains inside the cave, making the river more accessible. Now you can choose to visit the Underground River of the Guanyan Cave by the following means:

  1. On foot (Walking distance is about 1000 meters.)
  2. By sight-seeing elevator (The elevator is about 36 meters high.)
  3. By track car (The distance of a round trip by track car is about 500 meters)
  4. By rail train (The rail train is 30 meters long, with a capacity of 108 passengers. The length of a round trip by train is about 500 meters )
  5. By wooden boat (The wooden boat has a capacity of 12 passengers. The length of the trip by boat is about 700 meters. You can enjoy the sight of the underground fall in the cave).

The Gudong Falls are located at the bottom of Mount Butterfly in Gudong Village of Dayu Town in Guangxi Province just across the Lijiang Waishi Wharf. It is 25 kilometers from Guilin, and 8 kilometers from the Lawn Tourist Road. The underground springs are 180 meters higher than the Lijiang River and gush out to form incredible waterfalls. It is the only multi-level waterfall group formed by underground springs in China. The Gudong falls consist of 13 sequent falls with a total drop of 90 meters and an average width of 20 meters. Each of the falls has specific features of its own. Some have rocks jutted out of the water in the shape of tumbling mandarin ducks. Some flow so rapidly that they remind people of a dragon blowing water out of its mouth. Others flow down from so high above that the water splashes into beautiful spray when reaching the pool. The water is clear and sweet; it contains only 0.1 gram of sand per cubic meter. The falls are surrounded by towering trees, making it a very tranquil and secluded place.

Apart from the Gudong Falls, there is a large forest on Mount Butterfly. The forest coverage rate reaches an amazing 96%. It is mainly a tropical and subtropical rain forest and covers an area of 200 hectares including 133 hectares of primeval woods. Maples and pines predominate the forest. Also, there are various kinds of wildlife in it, making it a natural zoo. Tourists can enjoy fresh air and listen to beautiful bird songs in the Gudong Forest. It is advisable to visit the falls in autumn because the maple tree leaves will turn red during that period, and the scenery is absolutely breathtaking.

Because of its natural beauty, Municipal Education Committee of Guangxi Province decided to make the Gudong Falls an environmental education base. There are ecological models built in the resort showing tourists the relationship between the earth, wildlife, and human beings. Not only can you enjoy the fascinating fall scenes, but also acquire beneficial information on environmental protection.

Constructed with wood, the original slab bridge had three arches and was destroyed almost completely in a flood. Ancient Town Daxu is located 18km southeast of Guilin City and 30km away from Lingchuan County. Situated on the north shore of Lijiang River’s midstream, it is an ancient town with rich traditions. Historical records hold that the construction started in Song Dynasty, bloomed in Qing Dynasty and reached its peak at the Republican period (1912-1948). Back in 1500, Daxu (big embankment) has known for its size and was regarded as the most famous one among the four embankment towns in Guangxi (Reed Embankment town in Binyang, Military Embankment in Cangwu and Bridge Embankment in Guixian).

The town covers 193.78km2 with a population of 51,600. The permanent resident population is 15,000 and agricultural acreage is 35.2 hectares. Ancient Town Daxu is a waterway transportation hub, though better known for its market fair. It connects Chaotianxin River and Ma River in the east, Xiangsi River in the west and Lijiang River in the north, which makes the town a gateway up to Hunan down to Guangzhou. The town was populated in Han Dynasty, grew into a commercial town in Northern Song Dynasty and became one of the four famous towns in Guangxi in Ming Dynasty. Lingui County Annals holds that the town was “a thriving land and water terminal”. Even during war time, thousands of people came here for commercial trades and the number of merchant ships was up to 200 to 300. The main road of the town stretches 2km along the Lijiang River, covered by marble slabs and lines up by old houses. The town still keeps the traditional bamboo workshops, straw sandals workshops, funeral shops. herbal clinics and the barber shops.

Ancient Town Daxu Stories

1.   Lingchuan Dog Meat

The local delicacy of Ancient Town Daxu is at large under the influence of Lingshuan food. It is famous for Lijiang freshwater fish and dog meat, especially the Lingchuan dog meat. The dish won “Best Food Award” in the First Local Culture Exposition in 1991 and began to earn its fame nationwide and worldwide, serving as the southern counterpart of Peking Duck in north China. The wine-making industry of the town started in the Ming Dynasty. The traditional rice wine is still the favorite drink of many local citizens. The degree of the alcohol ranges from 28o to 55o with a delicious taste but doesn’t cause dizziness. The wine grounds feed the pigs and everything is made the best use of. During Dagon-boat Festival the must-see event around the town is the dragon boat race. Gui opera and dragon boat singing competition are also popular activities.

2.   Tomb Group in Ancient Town Daxu

When the tourist route was built between Guilin and Moupan Mountain in 2001, a group of tomb group was discovered and shown to the world. Seven tombs stand in the positions of the seven stars in the Big Dipper. Moreover, the sizes of the mounds of the tomb vary to the different levels of brightness of each star, which is the first record in Chinese archaeology history. The tomb group lies on the east side of House Hill (also known as Seven Star Hill). Folklores hold that the tombs belong to the ancestors of the Zhu family in the town who were blood relatives to Jingjiang Prince. The relationship between the tombs and the seven stars has not been confirmed, however, judging from the funeral objects of the tomb, they have nothing to do with Jingjiang Prince. The tomb group is similar to Pingleyin Hill tombs in Warring States Period to the Western Han Dynasty which were discovered in 1974.
