When you stand in the deep hole and look up around, you will see the thousand meters high “hole edge” slope after slope, which are all the terraces reaching to the sky. The annular mountain, which stretches as long as four or five miles, is just like a giant dragon lying on the ground. The Longji Terrace is 22 kilometers away from Longsheng County and 103 kilometers away from Guilin, with a total area of 66 square kilometers. The terraces are distributed between the height of 300 meters and 1100 meters and the degree of the slopes is mainly from 26 to 35, while the steepest can be 50 degree.

The terrace is comparable to a shell, forming tier upon tier some small some, big layers. Watching it from a far distance, the beautiful curve of the terrace, is strip by strip, and stream by stream, paralleled or crossed. The twisted layers are like spiral shells, the misty ones like cloud tower, showing the breathtaking line of beauty. The lines are natural and smooth, unrestrained and fluency; the scale is majestic and magnificent. The Longji Terrace is known as the “the world’s best terrace”.

All the areas covered by soil develop terraces, from the rapid river valleys to the mountain tops with white clouds and from the edge of the forest to the edge of the cliff. The vertical height is five or six miles, while the width riches as far as five or six miles. The rolling and towering mountains climb to the sky step by step. The terrace is like a giant abstract painting between the sky and the earth. Everyone who has seen the breathtaking landscape is shocked. It is a shock which is beyond words and caused by the splendor of nature and mighty power of human beings.

Here we can see different sceneries all around the year. In spring the fields are filled with water; in summer, the green leaves are like arranges of green waves flowing from the sky. In golden autumn, the piles of heavy wheat, are racks of golden tower; and in midwinter, a timely heavy snow promises a good harvest and is like circles of white jade building on the cloud front. The picture deserves the title of the most marvelous spectacle on the earth. However, the most interesting thing is that in the vast world of terrace, the biggest field is no more than one mu and most of the fields are broken blocks of field which can only grow one or two rows of wheat. Here comes the saying “Coir raincoat can cover the field.”

Longji Terrace Mysterious Story

1. Terrace

It is said that in this place, one harsh landowner said to the farmer that he could not call it a day until he had ploughed 206 pieces of land. However, after a whole day work, the farmer just finishes 205 pieces. He had no choice but to pick up the coir raincoat on the field and get ready to go home. Yet to his surprise, he found that the last piece of field was just under the coir raincoat.

You can never imagine, how the first settlers here of Zhuang people and Yao people, over 8oo years ago, facing the deep mountain and depending on the primitive slash and burn agriculture, struggled to developed the first piece of terrace. The temptation of rice is so strong that their descendants carried on the work of their forebears with no hesitation. Day by day, year by year, is it the most satisfying thing for them to hear that another new piece of terrace has been cultivated whilst reaching into their later years they are still able to play with their grandchildren. From the Yuan Dynasty to the early years of Qing Dynasty, as long as 650 years, it will never occur to the ancestors who developed the Longji terrace that the terrace which they cultivated with sweat and toil even lives turn into such a charming and free world of lines.

2. Seven Stars around the Moon

There is one beautiful and sad love story about the origin of Seven Beauties.

Legend has it that there was young man of Zhuang nationality called Star fell in love with a girl of Yao nationality named “Moon”. However, at that time the conservatives in the village thought that the young men and women of Zhuang and Yao nationality could not get married with each other. If they did, they broke the rules of the villages and would be punished by the clan members. To avoid the view of clan members of both sides, they, after experiencing several setbacks, settled down in the mountain area covered by cloud and mist all year long. They cut into the mountain, growing farmland and developing layers of terrace around the mountain. Star and Moon depended on each other and bore children. Before long, they had three boys and three girls and they lived a happy life.

However, the good times did not last long. One day Moon went to chop wood and was discovered by her clan members. Then suddenly at one night, lighting torches in the night, the king of Yao nationality led his clan members and surrounded their hut. They bought Moon back to the Yao village and put her into the prison. The poor Moon, reviled by her clan members every day, missed her husband and children more. She, suffering form and hunger and coldness, became weaker and weaker gradually and finally died with regret. After her death, she was buried in the place known as “moon land” now. One day, Star took their six children to mourn Moon and cried so sadly that the God was moved. Suddenly it rained heavily with lightening and thunder, and strong wind. After the rain, Star and his children all disappeared, leaving only seven hills of different sizes around the tomb of Moon, taking the fancy shape of “seven stars around the moon”.

It is said that Star and Moon and their children went up to heaven and became the moon and stars in the sky, living a happy life. Now, there is a custom in Pingan Country, every August 15, if you fall in love with a girl, then you can tell her secretly to have a date with you on the “moon land”. If the girl also likes you, she will keep the appointment on time. Then watching the bright and clear moon and stars and making a wish, your love oath will come true.

The Painted NineHorses Mountain is located in the northeast of Xingping, a small town of Guilin.  Standing by the lake, seen from far away, the 400 high and 200 wide mountain resembles a huge painted screen. If you look carefully, you will notice nine horses in different positions: lying on side, running or eating. The most famous Chinese traveler Xu Xiake portrayed the mountain, which gave the reason for the Mountain’s name: on his painting you can clearly see the colorful stones. Seen from the distance, it resembles a printed screen. As the famous attraction of Guilin and an extraordinary gift from nature, the mountain was loved by various writers and poets.  Many poets such as Zouhao from Song dynasty and Xugong from Qing dynasty devoted their poems to this site. One of the biggest enthusiasts of the Painted Nine Horses Mountain was Ruanyuan, a minister from Qing dynasty. He had been to the mountain five times in six years.  He expressed his amazement about the mountain in numerous poems; his work still can be found on the Cliffside.  For centuries, counting the horses’ number has been a puzzle and joy for the visitors.  It is said that Prime Minister Zhou and general Chenyi once visited the mountain and each of them counted a different number of horses.  Prime Minister Zhou noticed 18 horses on the huge screen, including the shadows in the water.  In a word, called as the Champion Mountain of Guilin, the PrintedHorsesMountain is a must-see if travelling to Guilin.

The Painted Nine Horses Mountain Story

According to the legend, the Jade Emperor appointed the Monkey King as the Protector of horses.  However, the Monkey King didn’t attach any importance this job. One day, he released the horses and went back to his Water Curtain Cave, located on a cloud.  Nine of these horses, curious to see the world of men, stepped down from the realm of the Jade Emperor.  Having fed and watered, they ran to the river and swam down from Heaven.  The world of men attracted them so much that they decided to stay there. Upset with the Monkey King, who failed to fulfill his duties, The Jade Emperor ordered “Caotou” fairy to bring the nine horses back in 7 days. Reluctant to return to the Jade Emperor’s kingdom, the horses did not come out from the mountain until nighttime.  Therefore, “Caotou” faery could not find them for a long time.

One night, the nine horses decided to swim in the Lijiang River. The swim was so enjoyable that the horses stayed out long enough for the “Caotou” fairy to find them.  On hearing the imperial edict announced by the fairy, they

attempted to escape, however a huge mountain prevented them from doing so. Helpless, the nine horses were captured in mountain.  The “Caotou” fairy waited for seven days at the foot of the mountain, but the horses never came out again.

Afraid of the retribution the Jade Emperor would impose on her for failing the task, “Caotou” fairy decided to stay in the man’s world and guard the horses.  Long time after the seven-day deadline the Jade Emperor turned the fairy into a stone to guard the horses forever.  It is said that the stone behind the “Dasang” Bank is indeed the “Caotou” fairy. Overtime, more and more people wanted to see the site of this incredible story. That is how the Painted Nine Horses Mountain got its name.

In the fifth year of Hongwu (1372AD), the construction of Jingjiang Royal Residence under the Solitary Beauty Peak began. It was accomplished in the twenty- fifth year of Hongwu. At that time, the government limited the size of the buildings. The Residence consists of the Luck Receiving Gate, the Luck Receiving Palace, a chamber and a garden, constructed in that order. Around the main buildings, there are four halls, four pavilions and more than forty other secondary buildings, covering a total of 19.78 hectares. It was really large-scale.  From the year when it was accomplished to the collapse of the Ming Dynasty, 257 years had passed. During this time, 14 seigniors of 12 generations lived there. According to Guang Zhiyi, a record of national geography by Wang Shixing of Ming Dynasty, there were two thousand royal members living in the Royal Residence. Hence, large amounts of food were needed. The residents of the mansion exploited common people cruelly and brought a heavy financial burden on the local government. As a result, in the ninth year of Shunzhi (1652AD) the peasant army conquered Gui ling. The owner of the Royal Residence at that time, general Kong Youde, committed suicide and set the Royal Residence on fire. Before the construction of the Royal Residence, there were other buildings under the Solitary Beauty Peak. In Tang Dynasty there was a school palace. In Song Dynasty, the Iron Cattle Temple was built. It was renamed to DA Yuan Temple in Yuan Dynasty and then it changed to Wan Shou Palace. After the destruction of the Royal Residence, in the fourteenth year of Shunzhi (1657AD)Gongyuan was built on the same site. In 1921, it was home to Sun Yat-sen, preparing for the Northern Expedition. In the first years of the Republic, the Royal Residence became a school. In the winter of 1925, it was rearranged into the Zhongshan Park. In 1937, the government of Guangxi province took over the site. Destroyed during the anti-Japanese war and rebuilt shortly afterwards, the residence is now the site of the Guangxi Normal University.

Because it served as a residence to the Emperor Zhu Youlang when he fled from his capital, the mansion was also called “Imperial City”.  In 1370, Emperor Zhu Yuanzhang appointed his grandnephew Zhu Shouqian as Jingjiang King in order to defend Guilin.  In 1372, Zhu Shouqian started the construction of his mansion.  It was built according to the standards of a seignior’s mansion and both the exterior and the interior was luxurious.  The vast construction included the Chengyun Gate, Chambers, the ZuozongTemple, the Right Club Forum; a lot of pavilions and study rooms as well as the Imperial Garden, with a picturesque bridge connecting the grounds with a pavilion. The four doors “Tiren”,”Duanli”, “Zunyi” and”Guangzhi” were installed on each side of the mansion. The distance from “Duanren” (south door) to “Guangzhi” (north door) was 556.6m; between the east door and west door there was 335.5 m.  The 7.92 high and 5.5 thick walls were made of ashlar on the outside and lime slurry on the inside. As the oldest royal family in Ming dynasty, 11 generations of this clan lived there; 13 of them once inherited their ancestors’ thrones. However, Dingnan King Kong Youde from Qing dynasty occupied the mansion and changed its named to “Dingnan Mansion”.  After the peasant army leaded by Li Dingguo stormed Guilin, Kong Youde burnt the 250—year old mansion as an act of suicide.  Jingjiang Mansion was refurbished step by step over centuries. At present, Chengyun Gate, Chengyun palace, fences and “Yunjie Yuti” are open to the visitors.

In Zhizheng period, peasant Zhu Yuanzhang overthrew Yuan dynasty through peasant revolt and began Ming dynasty.  In Hongwu period, to consolidate the Current political situation, he appointed ten kings to defend different places.  One of them was his grandnephew Zhu Shouqian.  In ancient China, people believed in fortune-telling and paid special attention to the location of their houses and tombs.  The emperor ordered several ministers to find a lucky place for his grandnephew.  According to their reconnaissance, Zhu Shouqian was finally sent to Guilin on mission.  The Jingjiang Mansion, located in the south mouth of Duxiu Peak, served as his residence.  It took the workers more than 20 years to finish the mansion.
