Wupai River, also called Xunjiang River, is the best filed for competition and training of slalom in China which is at the foot of the highest mountain of South China- Maoer Mountain, in Ziyuan County of Guilin City, 138 kilometers away from Guilin. It originates from 1883 meters high Jinzi Mountain and it is the second longest river in Ziyuan County, belonging to Zhujiang River water system. It is very convenient to take a direct bus to the dock of driftage. It wins the title of “Hukou of Yellow River” and “Hutiao Gorge” of Guilin, which is famous for “dangerous waters, strange stones, dense forests and beautiful waterfalls”.

The driftage of Wupai River is about 30 kilometers long, with more than 200 meters’ drop height. There is no underground river and whirlpool during the whole driftage period and the drop height is less than 2 meters, which makes driftage exciting but safe, so Wupai River is not only suitable for common driftage, but also suitable for the competition and training of Canoe.

The most precious river segment for explorations and driftage is from Chetian to Hekou, which is about 30 kilometers long. The width of Wupai River is from 5 to 30 meters. The views that come into your eyes are streams of turbulent rivers, white waves blowing on your face and rubber boats riding and dipping. Before coming into the rapids, you are dry and clean, but after driftage, you will become all wet.

The surging Wupai River, like a uncontrollably wild horse, galloping in the deep valley. Exploring at Wupai River, the wild field and thrill of venture will make people become braver, from coward to hero as well as make people experience the endless joy of conquering the nature. Wupai River is the only site that can satisfy the conditions for world- class competition and training. In August, 2001, the invitation competition of Wupai River driftage was held successfully. Now Wupai River is new sport travelling brand which integrate sport travelling, ecological leisure, body built-up, exploration and driftage, and training of slalom.

Sudong Water Cave, also known as Dark Rock and Dragon Palace, is located in Sudong Village, 7.5 km away from Guanyang County. It is a rare, expansive, 25-meter deep water cave. A buried river runs through the bottom, earning the cave the title, “Most Spectacular Water Cave.” The stalactites in the cave are well preserved and in vivid shapes of animals and plants. The air here is cool and clean with a year-round temperature of 18o C. The part open to tours is 2 km long: the first 1.3 km are a waterway, and the rest is on land. After further exploration, visitors can go farther into Xiaolong Village, known as the local Shangri-la, after visiting the cave.

500 m to the left from the mouth of the cave is an unique spring—Tide Spring. The waters of the spring rise and fall six times every 24 hours. A fun fact about the spring is that a drum and bell are heard when the waters are rising. The broadest part currently measures 45 m, while the narrowest measures 35 m. Throughout the cave, several individual caverns exceed 1000 m2 in size, with the largest one measuring over 4000 m2. Almost all types of stalactite and Guangxi sediments can be found in this cave.

Sudong Water Cave Story:

1. The Formation of Sudong Water Cave

570 million years ago, the current Sudong Water Cave was nothing but a vast ocean. At that time, the climate was warm and wet. As a result, numerous sponges, brachiopods, and gastropods came into being. As time passed, hydrodynamic forces caused these creatures’ shells to abrasively rub together, depositing various biogenic and chemical carbonates into the sea. In this manner, the Sudong Water Cave slowly took shape over the course of many millennia. The rotation of the earth and the receding of water in the sea exposed a new land formation born of the coalescence of these chemical deposits. The amazing beauty of the rocks in Sudong Water Cave took nature millions of years to create; even now, the deposition of organic compounds continues. As such, future visitors may be able to enjoy an even more gorgeous Sudong Water Cave.

The stalactite is very unique. It resembles two animals. Looking from the outside, it looks like a white horse which is entering the cave; looking from the inside, it looks like an elephant which is getting out of the cave. There is a ballad said that ‘a rock with two shapes, it is very hard for the painter to decide which shape he will paint, as he could only paint one shape, horse or elephant’.
