Yu Mountain

Yu Mountain is situated in the Yushan Park, to the east from the North Pole Square and the west bank of Li River.  It is an isolated peak, where the tomb of imperial concubine “Hai” is situated. According to historical records, the Yudi Temple standing on the Mountain was constructed in Tang dynasty.  On the eastern side of the temple, a pavilion called “Nan xun” from Song dynasty was built.  The “Nanxun” Cave, an old buried channel in ancient times, connects southern and northern foot of the mountain.  There are many famous works on the cliff of Yu Mountain, such as the article of Han Yunqing from Tang dynasty, Zhuxi’s(Song dynasty) stone inscription “the Stele of Yudi Temple” and more.  Moreover, Zhangshi’s “the Record of Shaoyin Cave” and Fang xinru’s “Old Love Song” were carved inside the cave.

The Relic of Shun Temple

The relic of ShunTemple is located on the southern side of Yu Mountain, one of the most famous mountains in Guilin.  The mountain was named after the Emperor Yu’s visit to South China.  To honor his visit to the mountain, the Shun Temple was built. The ministers from Tang dynasty, Han yunqing, Han xiushi and Li yangbing, carved their common inscription, ”The Preface of Yu Temple” which is the earliest stone carving in Yu Mountain. This preface recorded the construction of Shun Temple.  Since Southern Song dynasty, the temple, serving as a monastery, has been reconstructed many times.  The relic of ShunTemple is one of the Yushan Park’s attractions at present.

Shaoyin Cave

Shaoyin Cave is situated at the west foot of Yushan. It used to be a watercourse flowing from north to south. Nowadays, it is 2~3 meters high, 5.5 meters wide and 105 meters deep. Its total area is 720 square meters. In front of the north entrance, the sound of flowing water and the sound of wind blowing through pines mixed together, resembling the Shao music practiced by Emperor Shun. It is the reason why the cave was called “Shaoyin”. In Ming Dynasty, the name was inscribed by Zhou Jinlong on the wall of cave. Yu Hui in Qing Dynasty inscribed two Chinese characters “Xun Xian”. Those two inscriptions express the unique feature of Shaoyin cave.

Nanxun Pavilion

Nanxun Pavilion is situated on of the southern slope of Yushan. It was built by Zhangshi in the second year of reign of the Chunxin Emperor in the Song Dynasty (1175) and was refurbished many times. To the east from the pavilion you can see the Lijiang River; in the south there is pine forest; in the north those two sceneries combine. The pavilion was destroyed during the Anti-Japanese War and still hasn’t been fully reconstructed. In the past, people used to have banquets here. Nowadays, the newly built Yushan Bridge connects the east and west of Lijiang River, which will enable more visitors to see the pavilion.

YushanPark is situated in the south of the North Pole Square in Guilin, next to the Yushan Bridge.  The park got its name because Yu Mountain located inside the park.  It is a popular starting point for tours around Guilin.  The park is designed in grand detail, combining traditional and modern styles and the glamour of the East and West.  The whole park can be divided into two parts.  The northern part is a typical modern park with springs and waterfalls, surrounded by picturesque scenery. During the night, the park’s beauty is enhanced by colorful illuminations. In the southern part of the park, a reconstruction of YudiTemple and magnificent “Wufu Tower” (symbolizing peace, long life, wealth, safety, morality and good ending) with a bell are particularly worth mentioning.   There are many other unique constructions in the southern part of the park, such as the marble “Jiu chongtian” (meaning ‘nine spheres of Heaven’) and “Jiya Garden” with a great collection of rare treasures, handicrafts and more.

Yushan Park Story

1. Yudi Temple and Chess

The mountain is named after Emperor Yu, who passed the mountain during his journey to the South. To memorize the emperor’s visit, the Yudi Temple was built in the Qin dynasty.  The Temple has a history of over two thousand years.  At the entrance to the temple, there is a bronze statue of Emperor Yu’s little brother Xiang, the inventor of Chinese Chess (called ‘xiangqi’ in Chinese). According to the legend, Xiang was known as a cheeky boy, having no respect for his older brother’s orders.  He mended his ways after Yu’s death. Xiang guarded the temple’s doors to keep the monsters from disturbing his older brother at rest.  Xiang became so intelligent, that all his hair fell down and he became bald. That is how the Chinese idiom”Cong Ming Jue Ding” (signifying a person of unusually high IQ) came to life. His invention is a good example of his intelligence. It is said that if one wants to be clever or succeed in gambling, he or she should touch Xiang’s head.

Golden Mountain

At the back of village committee of Shuangquan Village in Yangdi Town, there is a mountain made of four hilltops that called “Golden Mountain”. It is said that villagers can pick up “gold” on the mountain all the year round. As to the origin of the name of the mountain, there exist two versions among villagers. One is said that in the beginning of Liberation period, some archaeology personnels reached the mountain top, found a lot of golds and dug them away. Others who heard about their experience began to call the mountain “Golden Mountain”; the other version says that the mountain is rich in calcites which has great value, therefore being called “Golden Mountain”.

Li Six Bridges

According to the plan, after the restoration of Yang Causeway, the six bridges of Huanbi, Liujin, Wolong, Yinxiu, Jingxing, and Junyuan will be reconstructed on the bank. Li Six Bridges is the six pearls of Yang Bank, where the soul of it lines. The desigh of Liliu Bridge refers to the Six Bridges on Su Bank, which takes the semicircular arch and over semicircular arch as the keynote, fully showing the beauty of Six Bridges lying quietly over the water like a rainbow. The decorate stone of side face use the Gaohu stones; the pavements use the bluestones of Zhejiang; the breast boards of the bridges which can best show the texture of Li Six Bridges use the Putian blue stones.

County of Yang Causeway is in the northern part of Yangshuo County. The government is located on the dyke Yang Causeway, which is 39 kilometers way from the county and 50 kilometers away from Guilin City, accounting for 102.8 square kilometers. The one-hundred-mile Lijiang River with “one mountain, one river and one poem” is like a colorful landscape painting with poetry in it. If we see Lijiang River as a long lyric poem, then the part from Guilin to Caoping is just the prelude of the poem while the part from Caoping to Yang Causeway is the main theme of it. The breathtaking landscape of Yangshuo comes into your eyes as if a skylight is pulled open slowly.

The Yang Causeway begins from the Yang Causeway Guanyan village, and then comes to the Xingping sightseeing area. The river, as long as 18 kilometers, is the golden part of Lijiang River. The Yang Causeway road is only 12 kilometers away from the second class highway of Guilin. You can take a special train or common passenger bus from Yangshuo or Guilin to the Yang Causeway dock. The river is 46 kilometers away from Guilin to the north and 47 kilometers away from Yangshuo to the south. When the water is shallow, the Yang Causeway will be the starting point of Lijiang River traveling, for the boats can not go through the water segment of Lijiang River between Guilin and Yang Causeway.

Yang Causeway is the typical mountain area of “nine mountains with half water and half field” and the people here are honest and simple. It is far away from the noise of big cities and there is no pollution of modern industry. This part of river is twisted, with blue water, numerous attractions, reflection of those mountains, and verdant forests, where you can best experience the beauty of “the river is like the green ribbon while the mountains are jade hairpin”. The main attractions are Xiangba Island, Banbian Qidu, Watching the Moon, Fairies Pulling the Querning Stone, Moonlight Island, Water Curtain Cave, and Wonderful View of Lang Stone.

Yang Causeway county is the typical “Karst” landform and there are many mountains in this area, which are far more than the area of field. There are only 10009 mu (1mu=0.0667 hectares), among which 6394 mu are paddy field and 3615 mu are grazing land. People here depend on the agriculture to make a living and the main grain cops are rice and corn. The grain output of 2002 is 3947 tons, with personal proportion of 349 kilograms; the main cash crops are citrons, clausena lansiums, oranges, and persimmons. It is rich in mineral resources, especially rich in calcites, which cover an area of 40 square kilometers of Tangjia Village. The degree of whiteness of the mineral is over 95%. Now there are 3 points which have been exploited with the annual output of over 60 thousand tons. The productions are sold in or far beyond the village.

Yang Causeway Story

Yang Causeway

Yang Causeway is a famous scenic site at the shoreside of the Lijiang River. There is neither row of verdant poplars nor mellow willows. Then why it is called “Yang Causeway”? In fact, the name s from two local mountains: Yangjiao Mountain and Yangdi Mountain. A long time ago, a huge goat that attained the way and became an evil spirit lived on the mountain. The goat could graze up green grass in several miles overnight. Because of the big capacity for eating, all grasses and leaves were eaten up by the goat. At last, it began to gnaw at riceshoots and vegetables. As a result, local farmers suffered disater and poured out their endless grievances. After the Jade Emperor knowing about the incident, he sent Might Miracle God to subdue the goad. Hearing about the news, the goat hid in a sequestered grotto, successfully dodged the Might Miracle God.

However, the Might Miracle God learned that the goat had already got used to eating, so it would be impossible for the goat to stay too long in the grotto. Consequently, the Might Miracle God pointed by finger and then a cloud of glossy and green riceshoots with growth vigour appeared. The delicate flavor of the riceroots gradually floated away into the grotto. Afterwards, the Might Miracle God turned himself into a sapling standing besides the field.

The goat became extremely hungry after hinding for several days, so it watched towards outside for quite a long time after riechening the delecate flavor of the riceroots. Of course, the goat didn’t see the Might Miracle God, it became so happy that it ran at full speed towards the riceroots and began to graze madly. At this time, the Might Miracle God appeared and angrily rebuke to the goat: “Do you know it’s wrong to ruin crops?” The goat felt a little shocked and scared first, but it was self-assured for its ability and then shouted as tough as bulls: “Do you want to have a competition? Never think that I am afraid of you.” The Might Miracle God became very angry and then wielded his sword. There is no time for the goat to react, one of its hooves had been cut off. The goat immediately became furious, glared its blood-red eyes and rushed towards the Might Miracle God with its two horns which looked like mountain peaks. The Might Miracle God sneered and then wielded his sword again towards the horns. The two horns were cut off with a loud noise. The goat felt so aching that it rolled on the ground. Seeing the scene, the Might Miracle God showed his natural sympathies and didn’t put it to death. The goat knew that itselt was not the adversary of the God and then escaped in a hurry.

From then on, there are two more mountains in this area, one is the Yangjiao Mountain turned by the horns, the other is the Yangti Mountain turned by the hooves. However, in the Guilin dialect, “yangti” and “yangdi” have the same pronunciation. Posterities of local Guilin people thought “yangti”was quite vulgar. In order to be well matched with the beautiful scenery, the name changed to “yangdi”.

It was built in the Ming Dynasty and is 13.6 meters high. The base of the tower is a two-tier octagonal Xu Mizuo, which is a type of foundation originated in India. In the northern part of the second tier, there is a Puxian bodhisattva carved lightly in stone. The Puxian Tower is situated on the top of the Elephant Hill. It commemorates the story of Puxian bodhisattva journey on the elephant’s back. The image of an elephant carrying a bottle symbolizes peace, beauty and happiness in many Asian legends. The elephant trunk rock is located next to the water moon cave and the trunk of Elephant Hill, as its name suggests. The rock is 1.9 meters high, 3.3 meters wide and 13.5 meters long, covering the area of 44.5 square meters. The rock is the best viewing point of the Lijiang River scenery.

There is no way to reach the northern eye from the mountain.  Both of the two eyes (holes) are perfect to appreciate the beautiful scenery.  From the left-hand side, the Lijiang Hotel and the panorama of the city and the mountain come in sight.  From the right-hand side, the shadows of small sailing boat floating between the mountain and the tower create a picturesque scene.

The Water Moon Cave is located between the ‘elephant trunk’ and the ‘elephant legs’. 12000 years ago, the earth crust rose and the Lijiang River narrowed. That tiggered the formation of the Water Moon Cave. It is a round cave, which can be seen through, 17 meters long, 9.5 meters wide and 12 meters high. The total area of the cave is 150 square meters. As the bottom of the cave is under water, the cave changes its size following the rise and fall of water. The entrance of the cave faces towards the sun, and is called Chaoyang Dong in Chinese. The cave looks like a moon floating on the water. The image is very vivid so the name Water Moon Cave is still used today. “The water moon of Elephant Hill” is the famous scenery, depicted in many poems. The water moon and the moon rock on Chuan Hill enhance beauty of the area – one in the sky and another on the water. That forms the unique scenery known as the “two moons of Lijiang River”. In the cave, there used a pavilion named Chaoyang, built in Song Dynasty and  renamed as Deyue pavilion (meaning ‘get the moon’) in Qing Dynasty. Unfortunately, it has been destroyed. On the wall of the cave, there are over 50 cliff stones carved with the essays of such famous ancient writers’ as Lu You, Fan Chengda and Zhang Xiaoxiang.

Elephant Trunk Hill, also known as Li Shan, Yi Shan or Chengshui Shan (‘shan’ meaning hill/mountain in Chinese) is located between Peach Blossom River and Lijiang River in Guilin, Guangxi province. Its most common name is the Elephant Hill, as the hill resembles a giant elephant stretching its nose to get water from the river. It is one of the best examples of the landscape of Guilin. The main attractions in the Elephant Trunk Hill area are the Water Moon Cave, the Elephant’s Eye rock, the Puxian Tower, the Hongfeng temple and the exhibition hall of the Taiping revolution site in the temple. Nearby, there is a stupa, marking the location of Kaiyuan Temple, which used to stand there. The water moon cave is located between the elephant trunk and the legs, resembling a bright moon floating on the water. This famous scenery is known as the “water moon of Elephant Hill”. An inspiration for poets and artists for over thousand years, it has been a must-see for visitors to Guilin since Tang Dynasty. The Elephant Trunk Hill is one of the national 4A-level scenic spots. You can take No.2, No.23, No.16, No.57, No.58, and No.88 buses to get there. Covering a total of 118800 square meters, it preserves a rare type of karst topography. There is a stone path leading to the peak of the hill. In the past, the Taiping army used to station there, as the top of the hill is flat. On the eastern side of the peak, there is a brick tower built in Ming Dynasty, known as the Puxian tower. A Puxian Bodhisatva is displayed there. The tower resembles a round bottle or a hilt, which is why it is also called bottle tower or hilt tower.
