Diecai Gate is located in front of Yangzhi Hall, it is an archaic building standing above the wind tunnel. While sightseeing, visitors can climb up the stairs of the gate.  The “Piled Silk Hill” plaque written in official script by Wei Jichang is hung above the gate.  The couplet on two sides was written by the administrative minister of Guang Xi named Zhang Xianghe and carved by a calligrapher called Wu Chundao. The couplet goes as follows: ”with the cool climate of Dieca Hill, happiness comes to heart”.  After crossing the gate, a mix of historical, religious and natural scenery is waiting for you. Next to the Die Cai Pavilion, there is a 2.33m high, 0.77m wide petroglyph. The words, stretching over 43cm, are written in regular script and mean “the accumulation point of landscape”.  According to the record of “travel notes of mountains in Guangxi”, Die Cai Pavilion was initially named “Ju Jing Pavilion”. The petroglyph was made to mark the landscape.   The Die Cai Gate is the third work of Jing Yuqing, whose works are known to be decorous and powerful.

Diecai Hill was formerly called Gui Hill. It is located in the northeast of Guilin Municipality, bordering on Li River (or Lijiang River). Diecai Hill and the other two attractions: Duxiu Peak (Peak of Unique Beauty) and Fubo Hill (Subdued Wave Hill or General Fubo Hill) in the city create a triangle. Diecai Hill occupies an area of two square kilometers, constituting of Mingyue Peak (Bright Moon Peak), Xianhe Peak (Crane Peak), Siwang Hill (Looking Around Hill) and Yuyue Hill. Lying across the down town, it creates picturesque scenery and is easy to climb, becoming a hotspot among the attractions in Guilin. Tourists can see many beautiful sites and places of interests in the mountain such as Diecai Pavilion (Piled Silk Pavilion), Yuyue Ge (Ge is a multi-storied pavilion), a monument to memorize Qu Shisi and Zhang Tongchang (two heroes of Ming Dynasty), Yanyzhi Hall (Admiration/Respect Hall), Xianhe Cave (Crane Cave), as well as Feng Cave (Wind Cave), Diecai Tower (Filed Silk Tower), Wangjiang Pavilion (Pavilion for Viewing the River) and Nayun Pavilion (Pavilion Reaching the Cloud). There are many inscriptions on slopes, carved by the prominent figures of previous dynasties, which are the quintessence of the Chinese cultural relics. Stepping on Mingyue Peak and stopping by in the Nayun Pavilion to enjoy the view of the city, a verse of a poem comes into life – “enjoying the sunshine and the breeze with hills surrounding from all sides, I feel like in the paradise.”

The name Diecai Hill originated from travel notes, The Travel to Diecai Hill by Yuan Hui, a scholar in Tang Dynasty. He compared the colorful horizontal grain of the mountain rock to a gorgeous silk piling together, which gave the name to the hill. Looking from a right corner of the Diecai Pavilion, set up by scholar Qin Huan from Qing Dynasty, a tourist can see the transected cliff of Mingyue Peak. From this location it resembles colorful folded brocade. This is the best place to perpetuate the “piling silk” with your camera.

The Wind Cave is a peculiar cave in the middle of Mingyue Peak. Its name came into being because of the winds blowing all the year round in the cave. The cave has two entrances, to the north and south respectively. As you walk further down the cave, it becomes more and more narrow, allowing only one person at a time to walk through the middle. The cave is 20 meters long, with the maximum width of 9.2 and height of 5 meters. The Wind Cave used to be an ancient channel, higher than the areas around it, resembling an hourglass in its shape. In between “Xiang-Gui Corridor” (the long and narrow plain between Hunan and Guangxi Province) and the valley joining Jiaqiao Mountains (Bridge Mountains) and Haiyang Shan (Ocean Mounain), a contra flow is formed. The wind varies depending on the season, fresh or cozy, warm or cold. The cave earns the name “Cool World” due to the wind blowing throughout the year. Many poems have been composed by the scholars from the ancient times, portraying different features of the wind in different seasons. Fresh, gentle, and cool gusts blow respectively, in balance. Wind Cave is not only a world of wind but also a treasury of cultural relicts. It is a major attraction in the area of Guilin.

Diecai Hill Story

1.Mulong Cave (Wooden Dragon Cave)

The cave is located in the East of Diecai Hill. It is 4 meters high, 2 to 3 meters wide and 10 meters long, covering an area of 40 square meters. Two cave mouths are located in north and south respectively. It is a few dozen meters away from the eastern side of Mingyue Peak and about 1 kilometer to the north from Fubo Hill. The only way to Longzhu Street (Dragon Ball Street) and Yiqian Street (the Street in Front of the Dak) leads through the cave. An old tale goes on that a twisted ancient tree which used to grow there transformed into a Dragon when the flood came. That is where the cave’s name comes from. During the years of Tianqi(1621~1627)in Ming Dynasty, the school inspector Cao Xue made two wooden Dragons and hung them at the top of the cave. However, they had been removed from there a long time ago. Though in the hills, Mulong Cave is located near the river. Tourists can get there through the path in Diecai Hill. Around 20 meters to the north of the cave, tourist can find a huge Hama Stone (the stone with the appearance of a toad), on which an ancient lama pagoda stands. According to the ancient texts, the pagoda was built in Tang Dynasty and is one of the oldest stone pagodas in Guangxi Province.

2.Xianhe Peak (Crane Peak)

It is said that there were two cranes perching on the peak. Someone engraved the cranes on the cave mouth at the hillside, so others could admire them. Thus, the cave got the name “Zhanhe Cave” (Crane Admiring Cave). In Ming Dynasty, a sage converted to Taoism in the cave and gave himself a religious name “Zhanhe Daoren” (Crane Admiring Taoist). Later on, he turned to other occupations and the cave was renamed Crane Cave. Afterwards, both the Peak and the Cave adopted the name “Crane”.

Seven kilometers east of the County of Yangshuo, visitors will find a prominent and towering tree known as the Big Banyan Tree. It has survived wind and rain over centuries since it was planted during the Sui Dynasty (581-618). It is also famous because the Chinese movie The Third Sister Liu was partly filmed here. The background of this beautiful love story adds a touch of magic to this centuries-old tree.

The Old Banyan, measuring seven meters in width and 17 meters in height, has experienced extensive growth over the years. Although its trunk is very old and its roots twisted, its branches and leaves stretch out so thickly that the sunshine hardly penetrates its canopy. It is under this tree that Third Sister Liu declared her devotion to her lover A’niu. In the movie, the Big Banyan of Yangshuo played witness to the eternal love between Sister Liu and A’niu.

1.   The Big Banyan Tree

The Big Banyan Tree, aged over 1,400 years with its canopy covering 7.5km2, can be likened to a Chinese landscape painting full of artistic inspiration. Legend holds that the Big Banyan Tree witnessed the love between the Third Sister Liu and her beloved A’niu. Now, Big Banyan Tree has become a token of love, happiness and sweetness.

It is said Sister Liu, a famous singer of Guangxi Zhuang minority, asked Brother A’niu on a date to the Big Banyan. Sister Liu was secretly in love with Brother A’niu, expressing her affection through folk songs and singing her heart out to the night. But A’niu remained oblivious. Frustrated, Sister Liu asked him out to the Big Banyan Tree and threw him a red embroidered ball to make clear her feelings for him. But with A’niu lacking the nerve to catch the ball and accept her, Sister Liu begged the Big Banyan to persuade him. Then a miracle happened – Brother A’niu finally picked up the ball and accepted her love. The two are said to be living happily ever after, marking the spot as a legendary place for young couples to express romantic feelings for each other.

Recent years, with more and more China films introduced into all over the world or foreign films shoot in China, there are an increasing number of foreign felt the fantastic view in China and want to book a China Flight and have a exciting China tour.

Huangyao is an ancient water town that has been relatively unknown until Hollywood filmed The Painted Veil a few years ago. While watching this film, the wonderful scene supervised me. It has been such describe the Huangyao: “Huangyao town as a millennium collection, have been forgotten in the library quiet on the shelves when people come inadvertently turned this beautiful chapter, Simple and elegant style to conquer the hearts of the people.”

Huangyao Ancient Town, with a history of thousand years, is situated in the northest of zhaoping, Guangxi, China, by the lower reaches of LiRiver and 200km from Guilin. It has long been known as a mini-Guilin for its typical development of karst topography, covering an area of 3.6 square km.

The town is most famous for its mountains with caves, pavilions, temples, ancestor hills, old trees and tablets. Every corner of the town presents a typically Chinese scene and presents a marvelous photo opportunity. Huang Yao was built in 927 B.C. and was a flourishing and wealthy town then.

Crisscrossed by three small rivers and canals the beautiful green water creates reflections of Huangyao’s arched roofs, lofty gables and ancient stone bridges and a poetic atmosphere that feels surreal. Often there are many art students alongside the streets and beside the ponds, drawing and painting, capturing some of the historic scenes there. The exquisite features of Huangyao are centuries old and the residents live as they always have making the town an open-air museum.  Surrounded by mountains on all four sides, Huangyao is fairly difficult to reach and relatively inaccessible with inconvenient transportation conditions- factors which have helped to preserve the ancient houses and architecture.

With only eight streets in the town, not a lot happens here. The elderly town people, who sit on their doorsteps all day watching people go by, are content to smile and wave but want no part of getting photographed, either because of spiritual reasons or missing teeth. But it is the town‘s primitively simple architecture with it grey tiles and stones that capture the attention of both artists and photographers who visit Huangyao. The mountains surrounding the town are all of stone, which have provided rich raw materials for the construction of its houses, doors, bridges, temples and slab-covered streets. With its ancient trees and surrounding environment, Huangyao’s architectural features blend beautifully and compose a landscape in complete harmony between man and nature.

If you have watched the film The Painted Veil and felt  inspired by the typcal scene ,you can go to Huangyao when you have a Guilin tour.

Some parts of China have become tourist cities completely, such as Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou. And more cities are eager and preparing to be a member of such international tourist cities. As the government is put efforts on developing western part of China, many inner cities are opening their doors and welcome visitors from all over the world. If Beijing Tours cannot attract you anymore and you would like to experience other sides of Chinese culture, then follow me through this article and you will find other options, like Guilin Tours.

Guilin is a major city of Southeastern part of China within the Guangxi province. Guangxi province is actually a gathering area for the ethnic minority Zhuang (壮族).Therefore, unlike modern cities in China, you can experience different cultures here. The base colours of traditional clothes of Zhuang for women are normally black and dark blue. This is because that the climate in Guilin is the subtropical monsoon which means it is warm and wet in each season and the summer time is much longer than the winter’s. But the patterns and colours of embroidery on and along their clothes are very bright. Also they are famous of Batik Dyeing (蜡染) for clothes textures. These women, who are the same as other ladies in the world, love accessories, especially silver ones. You can purchase very good delicate silver earrings, necklaces, and bracelets with unusual patterns and designs. But always remember to bargain the price and ask for a specialist to identify the quality of sliver.

There is an old saying that “No matter east or west, Guilin landscape is the best”. Why and what will surprise you? Well, in the opinion of Chinese Fengshui (风水), the best place with luck is the one around mountains and rivers or springs. Guilin is just this kind of place with perfect Fengshui. It has Lijiang (漓江), not the one of Yunnan province, and Elephant Hill (象山). And the landscape there is the typical Karst landform. If you are also interested in geology, then this place will be on your list of must-to-go. The Yangshuo (阳朔) town is the hot tourist place for backpackers in Guilin. This is the place highly recommended by the “bible” for travelers, the Lonely Planet. And once you arrive there, surprisingly, you will find that there are many restaurants and hostels operated by “foreigners”. The characteristic food in Guilin is the rice noodles and the secret is the soup which is cooked from several usual Chinese herbs to promote the fitness.

The last question may be how to get Guilin. Firstly, travelling by the airplane is the most convenient method to reach Guilin. Although the Liang Jiang International Airport in Guilin includes various international and domestic airlines, the international lines focus on the Asian countries. Therefore, it is unlikely you can take direct airlines to arrive at Guilin. It only takes a couple of hours to fly from Beijing to Guilin and costs around $150 for single trip. Secondly, taking the train to get Guilin is usually at least 23 hours. It is a long journey, but you can order the berth ticket and enjoy the views along the railway. The price for a berth ticket is $70 for one trip. The above is the two ways to arrive at Guilin city. Besides Guilin city, to reach other small but interesting towns around the city, you have to take the bus or fairy. For example, you can take the fairy from Guilin to Yangshuo through Lijiang (漓江) for $30. This line is one of the popular program in Guilin tourism. It leaves Guilin at 9am and arrives at Yangshuo at 2pm.

If you want to experience the specific place mentioned in the Lonely Planet, please add Guilin into your itinerary of China Flights now!
