Tiananmen Square marks the exact centre of Beijing. The grand construction consists of a gate tower and a platform built in Yong Le period in Ming dynasty (1368—1644 ). Formerly called Chengtian Square, it was constructed to show the civilians that the emperor was appointed by Heaven to govern the nation.  After refurbishment during the eighth year of Shun Zhi period in Ming dynasty (1368—1644), its name was changed to Tiananmen Square.  Besides honoring the Emperor, “Tianan” also meant the best wish of peaceful coexistence and stable situation.  During Ming and Qing dynasties, Tiananmen Square was the main entrance to the Imperial City. The magnificent building with 5 gates and 9 pillars was 34.7m high after reconstruction in 1970. Because of its elegant design, Tiananmen Square became the representative work of our national traditional architecture.
