The Western Hills Park is a must-visit of the local people at the beginning of spring. Longmen is the top of the Western Hills and also the best place to view Dianchi Lake. Besides, the famous Chinese musician, Nie Er, is buried here. The plank road leading to Longmen only allows two people walking abreast. So be careful when there are too many tourists. You can stay for the night in Taihuashanzhang or Taihuabieshushanzhuang beside Nie Er Tomb.

Best seasons to visit the Western Hills Forest Park:

Unlike Beijing, Kunming does not have harsh winters or sweltering summers. It is known as “the Spring City”. Kunming belongs to the temperate plateau humid monsoon climate. The annual temperature of the city averages 15 degrees Celsius. It is no more than 22 degrees Celsius even in the hottest months, and no less than 6 in the coldest. The daily temperature gap in Kunming is big during winter and spring, amounting to as much as 12-20 degrees Celsius. The rainy season is from May to October. When it rains the temperature may drop. So do not forget to take your jumper or coat on the trip. Generally, you can come to Kunming at any time of the year, but the best time is from March to October. During these months there are many ethnic festivals of the Yunnan minorities, and the fruit and flowers are in season. It is very good for shopping.

The Western Hills Forest Park Routes:

From the bottom to the top of the hill the tourist spots are: Nie Er Tomb, Huating Temple, Taihua Temple, entrance to the Western Hills Forest Park, cable car, and Longmen.

The Western Hills Forest Park Ticket:

Opening hours: 8:00-18:00

Entrance ticket: RMB 25 per person

Longmen Grottoes: RMB 30 per person

Yulan Garden: RMB 3 per person

Longmen ropeway: RMB 25 per person (one-way)

Cable car: RMB 5 per person (one-way)

Transport in the Western Hills Forest Park:

  1. In the city of Kunming you can easily find bus service directly for the entrance of the Park.

You can take Bus 6 from Liangjiahe station or Bus 51 from Juhuacun Station to get to the entrance of the Park. Bus 6 departs every 8 minutes from 6:30 to 19:00, and Bus 51 departs every 30 minutes from 7:00 to 17:30. For the convenience of the tourists, the city’s taxi company provides special coach service from the downtown Art Theatre to Nie Er Tomb. It departs every 30 minutes from 8:00 to 16:30. There are also cars for the Western Hills Park from Dianchi Cinema, Art Theatre and Jinhua Hotel. If you take a taxi, it costs RMB 30. There are cable cars in Yunnan Minority Village and it takes you from Haigeng and the Western Hills. A one-way ticket costs RMB 30 and a round trip RMB 50.
