The Second Bathing Beach, also known as “the Taiping Bay Beach”, is located next to the Huashi Villa in the Badaguan Convalescence Area, along the Taiping Bay. The bathing beach was developed by the German governor of Qingdao in the Republican period of China, when Qingdao was a colony of Germany. After the People’s Republic of China is founded in 1949, Qingdao was taken back, so was the bathing beach. The beach is most famous for its fine sand, clear water, and gentle wave. Many famous Chinese and foreign political leaders have been there before.
On the east side of the bathing beach, you can see several shabby small pergolas. These pergolas seem to be in disharmony with their surroundings. They are well preserved because of their profound historical values. In 1957, Chairman Mao came to Qingdao to attend
the meeting of the Political Bureau. Before the meeting, he paid a visit to the bathing beach and discovered the pergolas. He thought that the pergolas would be a nice place to hold the meeting since they could enjoy the beautiful ocean along with the meeting. Other political advisors agreed with his idea. So several days later, they had the meeting in the pergolas. That perhaps was the most romantic political meeting in Chinese history. The small pergolas gained great fames because of this historical event.
The Second Bathing Beach only opens to tourists in summer. In other seasons, you are allowed to visit the beach, but not allowed to bath in the ocean. The magnificent view there makes the beach an ideal place to take wedding pictures. In sunny days, hundreds of couples will take photos on the beach together. If you are lucky enough, you can experience this rare sight too.
