The No. 16 in the Juyongguan Avenue is the elegant Princess’ House. Established in the 1930s, the building occupies an area of 1,000 square metres, with a floor area of 721.98 square meters. The typical Denmark style building looks like an exact realistic version of those buildings described in Andersen’s fairy tales. The exquisite house is called “the Princess’ House” because it was built for a princess.
In the year 1929, the Prince of Denmark came to Qingdao by his luxurious cruise ship to enjoy his holiday. He went sightseeing around the city, and discovered the gorgeous Badaguan Convalescence Area. Since the area is situated beside the sea, and filled with extraordinary natural beauty, he regarded it as a wonderful place to spend holiday. So he ordered the then ambassador of Denmark in Qingdao to buy a piece of land there and build an exquisite house on it. He planned to invite his sisters, the Princess of Denmark to the house next holiday. However, he failed to arrange the journey, and the princess never came. But people still called the building “the Princess’ House”. It is a four story European style courtyard house made of wood and brick. The whole house is painted deep green, with white edges. There are large French windows on the side of the building that is faced with the sea, so that people who live in it can enjoy the splendid ocean view whenever they want. Inside the house, you can see delicate cupboard, stairs made of precious timber, fancy floor, and lovely painted walls. In 1992, the Princess’ House was rated “Provincial Units Heritage of China”.
The villa next to the Princess’ House is the Songs’ Garden. It is a grand American style building with simple and elegant design. There are large marble flowerpots around the hall of the building on the first floor. The villa is famous because it acted as settings in a popular Chinese TV series, Soong Ching-ling and her sisters. It was called the Songs’ Garden for the same reason. You can visit the garden during your trip to the Princess’ House because they are quite close to each other.
