The Badaguan Convalescence Area is located in the eastern Huiquan District of Qingdao in Shandong Province. It is one of the most renowned convalescence areas of China. The region consists of ten beautiful avenue and the buildings alongside. Each avenue is named after a famous Chinese pass. That is why the area is called “Badaguan” literally means “eight great passes”). It used to be a villa zone where many bureaucrat capitalists lived during the Republican period of China. After the People’s Republic of China was founded in 1949, government renovated it and changed it into a convalescence area. Many Chinese and foreign political leaders have visited here before.

The Badaguan Convalescence Area is like a large garden. You can see trees and flowers everywhere. Elegant villas are dotted among them. The border trees planted along each avenue in the area are different. The Shaoguan Avenue is decorated by Peach trees, while the Zhengyangguan Avenue is a paradise of Crape Myrtle Trees. Because different border trees have different flower seasons, visitors can enjoy beautiful sceneries no matter when they visit the area. Recently, a great many peach trees are planted in the northeast corner of the area, and form a small forest. It is a very nice place for jogging and having picnics. Since many lovers chose it as their rendezvous, the peach forest is also known as “the Corner of Love”.

All the buildings in the Badaguan Convalescene are one of a kind. You can find buildings with the architectural style of Russia, Great Britain, France, German, Denmark, Spain, Greece, Japan, Sweden, and America in the area. No wonder local people regard it a display of buildings all over the world. In the west part of it, there is a simple but elegant American style building, the Haidong Restaurant. Next to the Second Bathing Beach, you can see a typical Chinese style building, the Huiquan Hall. Because the architectures there are very unique and delicate, many directors choose this place as settings for their movie. Many Chinese singers shoot their MTV there, too. The quiet and fancy Badaguan Convalescence Area is a must visit attraction in Qingdao.

The Slabs in front of the Huashi Villa

There are two different slabs in front of the Huashi Villa. One of them is a granite stone slab set by the Administration of Cultural Heritage of Qingdao on July the 27th, 1984. It says that the Huashi Villa was built by Germen in 1903, and rates it as municipal cultural relic’s protection units. But the other slab tells a different story. The slab was made of stainless steel, and placed there by the Tourist Administration of Qingdao in June, 1997. The slab says that the Huashi Villa is built between 1930 and 1931 by a Russian nobleman. Archaeologist and historians today are still arguing about the exact date and builder of the villa.
