The national level scenic spot Sayram Lake (simplified Chinese: 赛里木湖; traditional Chinese: 賽裡木湖; pinyin:sài lǐ mù hú; literally “Sailimu Lake”) is located in the west of Yining City, Xingjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, China. The lake in a basin which is located in the north way of the Silk Road and it has 90km to the southwest of Bole City. The Urumchi – Lli Road along the south bank of the lake. The Sayralake is famous for its beautiful and mysterious natural landscape. People naming the lake “Ru Sea” in the past, the Ele Zhuoyi Tubo Wood Army Office (an organization to deliver the messages to the army) was set there in the Qing Dynasty. The lake’s elevation is 2073 meters, 30km long and 25km wide. The circumference of the lake is 90km and the water covers an area of 455-460 square kilometers. The lake is oval shape and the depth of water is 92 meters and it can store 21 billion cubic meters water. It is also the highest and the largest cold water lake in Xingjiang. In addition to some small ricers will flow into the lake, the Sayram Lake is mainly relies on the groundwater recharge. Because the lake is in a high position, it has large amount of evaporation. The mineral concentration of lake water is 3g/L and the lake belongs to the salt lake. Every winter, snow will cover the lake. The oval shape lake is to the icebergs what a glittering emerald is to soft silk floss. When summer coming, you can see a beautiful picture with the green trees formed a shade in the lakeside and many cows and sheep run in the vast grassland. The pairs of swans and ducks in water and the groups of wild gooses in the sky also catch your eyes. The lakeside is a good pasture in summer. In the end of July and the beginning of August every year, the Mongolian and Kazak herdsmen will hold the Naadam Festival there. The ten beautiful sceneries in Sayram Lake are “Golden Satin Edge,” “see the pine in Ke Mountain,” “the seven color lake,” “lovers in the middle of Sayram Lake” and so on. 1. Stories about the name of Sayram Lake

The Sayram Lake has many names. Because the lake is the last place which the warm and humid air from the Atlantic Ocean passed by, and people call it “the last tear drop of the Atlantic Ocean.” The local people call the lake “Santai Haizi” instead of the Sayram Lake for the Ele Zhuoyi Tubo Wood Army Office was set there in the Qing Dynasty. The lake was naming “the Western Clear Sea” in the ancient time. The Mongolian people call it “Sayram Nur”, it means “a lake in the ridge.” “Sayram” means “peace” in Turki. The name “Sayram” is Kazakh language, it means best wishes. In a legend, the lake formed by the tears of a pair of lover, and is also called “Tianchi” or “Ru Sea.”

All the people prayed for rains in the early morning. One day, a shepherdess Saili and her younger brother Saimu were get water from a well and thought how to help other people to get water. Suddenly, two swans turned in the well and said to the shepherdess that if you touched the Allah, all the people will never use up the water. In order to express your sincerity, you need to bring a boy and a girl for Allah. Then the swan disappeared. Saili and her brother told the story to their father when they came back home. They thought this over and Saili and her brother decided to sacrifice themselves. The next day, Saili and her brother went to the well and said to Allah that they would love to be the boy and the girl for Allah. Then the well turned into a lake. Two islands turned in the middle of the lake. People said the two islands were Saili and his brother. From then on, people named the lake “Sayram Lake” to commemorate Saili and Saimu.
