Duanqiao Canxue, meaning “the broken bridge in the snow”, is a very famous sight of the West Lake. Duanqiao, the broken bridge, is on the eastern end of the Dam Baidi and faces the city of Hangzhou. After it has snowed and you stand on Baoshi Mountain and look to the south, the West Lake is all silver and the bridge looks very vague. As the snow starts to melt in the sun, stretches of grey bridge appear in the snow, and from a distance it looks as if the bridge was broken. So it is called “Duanqiao”.
According to Chinese legend, Duanqiao is the meeting place of Xuxian and Bainiangzi, a very romantic couple. This makes it the most famous one of all the bridges on the West Lake. Because of this, many lovers or couples like to come to the Broken Bridge to celebrate their love.
