Yangshuo West Street is located in the south of Guilin, 63 kilometers away from the urban district. YangShuo is one of earliest confirmed state-level scenic spots in China. It is the most beautiful town at the bank of the Lijiang River, with a history of over 2000 years. Yangshuo compares favorably with Guilin, attracting a great number of tourists each year. Yangshuo West Street is a town where ancient customs still exist while modern elements are also popular. Another charming asset of West Street is the learning and communication of languages and cultures in China and foreign countries. People can learn foreign languages in professional foreign language schools, or communicate with foreigners in wine bars or painting shops. Chinese teach their foreign friends the Chinese language, calligraphy, Supermepole (Tai ji), cuisine and Chinese chess while foreigners pass on their own languages and cultures to Chinese people. As a result, both Chinese and foreigners seem to accomplish studying abroad in a short period of time.
The foreign tourists, who would come to Guilin and visit the Lijiang River, would always be attracted by Yangshuo West Street as soon as they arrive. Contrary to their behaviors in Chang an Avenue of Beijing and Nanjing Road in Shanghai, foreign tourists would take off their travelling bags immediately after arriving at Yangshuo. After drinking a bottle of beer or a cup of coffee, they don’t want to leave the beautiful town any longer. Therefore, there are foreiners studying Chinesekungfu and Chinese language in Yangshuo, some work as forein language teachers in civilian-run Buckland schools, others fall in love with girls or boys in Yangshuo West Street and get married finally. It is said that when calculated, by using the local population as the base number, China has the highest rate marriagesto foreigners. Yangshuo West Street is also jokingly to be called “foreigners’ street”, which has a history of over 1400 years.
Yangshuo West Street is still a pint-sized scalable architecture, as other small towns in the southern China. However, the small street is a spectacle of an international atmosphere. The decoration style of most restaurants, book and painting shops, wine bars and Internet bars is a combination of Chinese and Western elements, with signboards of foreign languages. Waiters and waitresses in art work shops, restaurants and wine bars, ordinary residents, even old women who sell fruits on the street can speak fluent English. There is no doubt that this phenomenon adds the colour of foreign culture to Yangshuo West Street. At every corner of Yangshuo West Street, you can always see tourists sit together, drink beer, taste coffee and chat in threes and fives with people who have different colors. What’s more, you can also see Chinese mother and European father who are not resticted by family planning policy, taking their mixed-blood children play on the street.
