The ancient Chinese civilization was very powerful for many centuries. Besides, Chinese army was also one of the most feared forces at that time. The Chinese army was a very successful force commanded by the Chinese emperor in the Asian continent. Meanwhile, the weapons used by Chinese warriors were considered as masterpieces. It is believed that there are 18 kinds of weapons of ancient China. Nowadays, people tend to consider these weapons as artworks. When you book China Hotels and plan China Tours, you can also consider taking a look at these ancient masterpieces.

First of all, “Dao” is a kind of widely used weapon. Dao was first used in China during its bronze age. There are many sorts of Dao; for example, long ones, short ones, etc. Most weapons that have blades and are used to slice, cut, hack, and chop are considered to be “Dao”. In most cases, Dao is used in hand-to-hand combat situation. Sometimes the Dao were similar to long swords; they had blades attached directly to their handles. The Dao was in many ways similar to the ‘saber’. The weapon was put to use in combat to cut, slice, chop and even hack. In Qin Dynasty (221BC-206BC), the importance of Dao has been realized. It was widely used among cavalry in the combat. For Chinese cavalries, they started using a long Dao that had a single sided blade mounted on its long shaft, while the infantry started using the broadsword which was also a type of the Dao. Right now, Dao still plays an important role in Chinese martial arts.

Secondly, another important weapon is the sword, which is called as “Jian” in Chinese. Actually it is believed as the king of ancient weapons. Not only was this sword used for a very long time, but, it was also one of the greatest masterpieces of Chinese craftsmanship. It was also often known as the ‘sovereign of blades’. It was believed that Jian is easier to use than Dao in hand-to hand combat for common troopers. The Jian was popularized during the Eastern Zhou Dynasty that ended in 256 BC. With time going on, Jian is no longer used in the war for common soldiers. On the other hand, it became a symbol for men of positions to show their stature which is like officers wearing side arms in modern military forces.

In addition, “Qiang” is another useful weapon. The truth is “Qiang” is a type of spear. The “Qiang” class of spears was believed to have evolved from the prehistoric spear that was known as the ‘Mao’. Qiang is like a type of upgraded “Mao”. The common Qiang could be described as a spear that had a long staff, and had a steel, iron, or bronze mounted tip. In ancient time, “Qiang” was used by the Chinese army for long distance combat that involved throwing these spears, even after firearms were introduced by the Qin Dynasty. In modern Chinese martial
arts, Qiang is still a useful tool to practice.
