The Reflections on the Yellow Cloth is the essence of the spectacular sceneries of the Lijiang River. It is situated 83 kilometres from the origin of the Lijiang River at the Jinghua Reaches within the Ancient Town of Xingping. As your boat glides past the Yang Causeway and the Painted Hills of Nine Horses, the river widens and the water surface is as calm as a mirror, and the green shadows of the mountains beside the river are clearly visible. Not far to the south of Mount Hua is the famous Yellow Cloth Shoal. The beauty of the Lijiang River reflections culminates at Yellow Cloth Shoal. The water here is so clear that you can see all the way to the bottom where there is a beige stone slate. It is several dozens of metres in length and width and stretches over the riverbed like a piece of yellow cloth. Hence the name “the Yellow Cloth Shoal”. On both sides of the shoal there are seven mountains of different sizes standing in the river, like seven beautiful and gentle young girls. Legend has it that once upon a time seven young fairy sisters of the Heavenly Court came down to visit the Lijiang River. Transfixed by the beauty of the river and the mountains, they delayed their return. The Heavenly King heard of this and ordered them back. But the sisters had become so in love with the scenery that they decided to stay here forever, and by magical powers, each of the fairies transformed herself into a mountain peak surrounded by the water.
The Reflections on the Yellow Cloth enjoys great renown throughout the world. In the Chinese embassy to the United Nations headquarters there are two giant paintings, one is of the Great Wall, representing China’s cultural heritage; the other is the Reflections on the Yellow Cloth, representing China’s natural splendour.
