The Guanyan Scenic Spot (literally “the champion of the karst caves”) is located at the middle reaches of the Lijiang River in Caoping Hui Autonomous Township 29 kilometres to the south of the City of Guilin in the Guangxi Province. It is a Sate AAAA-class tourist spot and the only developed scenic spot in the Jinghua Reaches of the Lijiang River. Famous for its natural idyllic scenery and unique local culture, the Guanyan Scenic Spot is called “the Pearl of the Lijiang River” and “the Zero Distance Scenic Spot”. This area was first developed in 1992 and now includes the excursion areas of the Underground River Zone, the Xiangba Island, electricity-powered rail train, gravity-powered rail train, electricity-powered tourist train, rope crossings, Yunwu Mountain Villa, Guanyan Restaurant and other tourist items and facilities. The total investment adds up to hundreds of millions yuan. The Guanyan Scenic Spot covers an area of more than 400 hectares. Inside the cave there is the largest sight-seeing and holiday resort of Guilin featuring the underground river. It also serves as a sanatorium park, a conference centre and recreational resort. The Guanyan Cave is 12 kilometres long and the tourist trip covers three kilometres. It is a magnificent place with numerous colourful stalactites and stalagmites of various shapes and sizes. You can choose to take a tour around the cave either on foot, by moving walkway, by sight-seeing elevator, by rail train or by wooden boat on the underground river. The tour will last about 90 minutes.

Since the old days, the tremendous beauty of Guanyan has overwhelmed large numbers of writers and poets who have composed many literary works in its praise. Mo Xiufu of the Tang Dynasty, Wang Zhenggong of the Song Dynasty, Cai Wen and Xu Xiake of the Ming Dynasty and Zha Shenxing of the Qing Dynasty have all visited Guanyan and written articles or poems about the place. Guanyan is the only place where you can enjoy all the four well-known aspects of the landscape of Guilin—the mountains, the rivers, the caves and the rocks. Guanyan offers more means of sight-seeing than any other cave in the world, and its electricity-powered-railcar track the longest of all. The Guanyan Scenic Spot of the Lijiang River has been a magnet for tourists around the world. Now nearly 600 thousand tourists visit the place every year and the number is still on the rise.
