The Heaven Pool, the Ganqiu Pool, and the Daping Pool in Mount Cuiwei Scenic Region are all barrier lakes formed by landslide. When landslide happened, huge rocks fell down and dammed the Taiyi River which flows through Mount Cuiwei, thus creating the three barrier lakes.
The Heaven Pool is located on the flat top of Mount Cuiwei. It covers an area of 0.14 square kilometers. The natural rock dam formed during landslide still exists beside the pool. There is mist shrouded the whole pool all the year round, making the pool a beautiful fairyland. Because it is very clear and limpid, the pool is rated “the Pearl on Qinling Mountains”. The marvelous lake scene, the huge rock dam, the grotesque stones beside, and the delicate hills around blend into each other and form picturesque sceneries. Tourists can take part in the rowing and fishing activities on the Heaven Pool while they are enjoying the breathtaking landscape.
Another Barrier Lake, the Ganqiu Pool, is located near the headstream of the Taiyi River, right below the Ganqiu Hill. Compared to the Heaven Pool, the Ganqiu Pool is larger in size, covering an area of 0.2 square kilometers. Due to the lack of water, the Ganqiu Pool now almost dries up. The mass of rocks that felt down during landslide is very huge. The colluvium deposit beside the Ganqiu Pool is more than 500 meters thick.
