Sudong Water Cave, also known as Dark Rock and Dragon Palace, is located in Sudong Village, 7.5 km away from Guanyang County. It is a rare, expansive, 25-meter deep water cave. A buried river runs through the bottom, earning the cave the title, “Most Spectacular Water Cave.” The stalactites in the cave are well preserved and in vivid shapes of animals and plants. The air here is cool and clean with a year-round temperature of 18o C. The part open to tours is 2 km long: the first 1.3 km are a waterway, and the rest is on land. After further exploration, visitors can go farther into Xiaolong Village, known as the local Shangri-la, after visiting the cave.
500 m to the left from the mouth of the cave is an unique spring—Tide Spring. The waters of the spring rise and fall six times every 24 hours. A fun fact about the spring is that a drum and bell are heard when the waters are rising. The broadest part currently measures 45 m,
while the narrowest measures 35 m. Throughout the cave, several individual caverns exceed 1000 m2 in size, with the largest one measuring over 4000 m2. Almost all types of stalactite and Guangxi sediments can be found in this cave.
Sudong Water Cave Story:
1. The Formation of Sudong Water Cave
570 million years ago, the current Sudong Water Cave was nothing but a vast ocean. At that time, the climate was warm and wet. As a result, numerous sponges, brachiopods, and gastropods came into being. As time passed, hydrodynamic forces caused these creatures’ shells to abrasively rub together, depositing various biogenic and chemical carbonates into the sea. In this manner, the Sudong Water Cave slowly took shape over the course of many millennia. The rotation of the earth and the receding of water in the sea exposed a new land formation born of the coalescence of these chemical deposits. The amazing beauty of the rocks in Sudong Water Cave took nature millions of years to create; even now, the deposition of organic compounds continues. As such, future visitors may be able to enjoy an even more gorgeous Sudong Water Cave.
