The Qingshitan Reservoir is upstream on the Lijiang River. It is 28 kilometres away from downtown Guilin and 50 kilometres from Guilin Shuangjiang International Airport. The total area of Qingshitan Reservoir is 170 square kilometres with a lake area of around 30 square kilometres and a land area of 141.7 square kilometres. The Qingshitan scenic zone is made of Donghu Lake, Xihu Lake and Gongping Lake. The capacity of these lakes is 600 million cubic metres. The Qingshitan scenic zone is the first lake zone in the south China.The Qinshitan Reservoir is the biggest natural and ecological protected zone near Guilin. It is called ‘Qingshitan’ because there is a green hill looking like a lion by the lake. In Chinese ‘Qing’ means green and ‘Shi’ means lion. There are deep valleys, over 20 sorts of fish swimming in the clear waters, and many small islands scattered in the lakes. The primitive forests in the scenic zone are well protected. More than 30 wild animals live in the forests. Near the reservoir, there are villages of ethnic minority groups. The villagers have their own living styles and dress codes. The Qingshitan Reservoir is a terrific natural place for escaping from the hot summer and recouperating. It is a paradise for travel, holidays, sight-seeing, water entertainments and to get in touch with nature. The Qingshitan scenic zone was granted as one of the best travel destinations by Guangxi People’s Government in 1994.

Near the Qingshitan Reservoir, there is a newly-developed scenic zone, Gudong Forest Waterfalls. The waterfalls are 26 kilometres away from downtown Guilin. There are many high waterfalls. Some of them are 180 metres higher than the water level of Lijiang River. The shapes of the waterfalls are various and unique. There is a tropical rainforest near the waterfalls. Over 2 million square metres of maples and mason pines make it quite a nice view. The air here is fresh with a high capacity of negative oxide ion. When autumn comes, maple leaves become red. Mountains will be covered with the same color. That’s really fantastic. You can also have spring water, wild vegetables and chickens here. They all create a natural atmosphere.
