The Panda House of Beijing Zoo was built in 1990 for the 11th Asian Game. The outward appearance of the Panda House is very unique. It was one of the Beijing top 10 architectures and the Beijing high grade constructions in 1990. The Panda House covers an area of over 10,000 square metres, with a building area of 1452 square metres. The main part of the house has a bamboo-shaped structure with 11 semicircle arch rings surrounding it. The 11 semicircles stand for the 11th Asian Game. The entrance of the house is in the southeast side while the exit is in the northwest. There are three exhibition rooms around the central hall where the public can see the pandas. On the roof of the hall there are 12 great balls of giber reinforced plastics hanging from the ceiling and are used for acoustics. The functional blocks are in the semi-underground and include rooms for insolating, medical treatment, fresh bamboo, deliveries, food making and TV supervision. The outdoor sports ground has wooden perches and recreational facilities for pandas. Bamboo is grown around the Panda House. There are the black and white cobblestones decorated on the path to the Panda House.
The Olympic Panda House was built in 2008 where 8 new pandas are on display. These pandas are from Wolong Panda Reserve of Sichuan. The original Panda House was renamed the Asian Panda House. Both these two houses are open at the same time.
