Namtso or Lake Nam (officially: Nam Co; Mongolian: Tengri Nor; “Heavenly Lake”) is a mountain lake, approximately 112 kilometres northwest of Lhasa. Namtso was born at Paleogene age, result of Himalayan tectonic plate movements. The lake lies at an elevation of 4,718 m, and has a surface area of 1,920 square kilometres. This salt lake is the largest lake in the Tibet Autonomous Region. Namtso has five uninhabited islands of reasonable size, in addition to one or two rocky outcrops.

For Namtso, its purity and solemnness are symbols of Qinghai-Tibet Platean. In Tibetan, Namsto means “Heavenly Lake”. It is one of the three holy lakes in Tibet. It is famous for its high altitude, vast area and gorgeous scenery. If you take a walk around the lakeside, you will find the colour of lake water is crystal-clear blue. With the beautiful blue sky joining the surface of lake in the distance, it creates a truly breathe-taking
scene that each visitor will never forget.
Namtso Lake maintains its levels from rainfall and melted snow flowing from high mountains. Five islands stand in the waters of the lake,
among which the largest one is Liangduo Island. In the past time, the islands have been used for spiritual retreat by pilgrims who walk over the lake’s frozen surface at the end of winter, carrying their food with them. They spend the whole summer on the islands and can not return to shore until water freezes in winter. Right now, this activity has been banned by Chinese government.
Summer is the perfect time to travel to Namtso. Wild yaks, hares and other wild animals leisurely look for food along the expansive lake shores; countless migratory birds fly here to lay eggs and feed their young; sheep and cows herds are like flowing white blanks on the green grassland which can stretch as far as your eyes can see. At this time of year, Namsto is full of activities. You will actually feel the
feeling of “life” by yourself. Hence, you can understand why Tibetans take Namsto as the symbol of goodliness and happiness.
Meanwhile, you can also take a look at the gorgeous sunrise and sunset of Namtso. For this time, you can leave the noise behind, feel the peace and serenity. It is said that Namtso is a goddess; she is guarded by Nianqing Tangura Mountain. As a holy place, your spirit will be cleaned by Namtso. If you are lucky, you night also see the amazing “double rainbow” scene which you will never forget. Just leave your worries behind and enjoy the breathe-taking beauty of Namtso.
