The Chinese name of Gedan Songzanlin Temple is Guihua Temple. It is 5 kilometers far from the Shangri-La County. It is a provincial-level key cultural relic’s protection unit. The temple is the largest famous temple of Yunnan Tibetan Buddhism. The total area of the temple is 500 hectares. The wall of the temple is strong and thick. The temple has five gates and each gate has a name, they are Zhaya, Duke, Dongwang, Longba, Luba. The two main temples, Zacang and Jikang, are built in the highest, located in the center of Gedan Songzanlin Temple. The temple, sitting in the south and facing northward, is a five-floor Tibetan carved building which can accommodate 1,600 people chanting. Each side of the wall in the temple was used to store the Buddhist Scriptures. In the front of the main hall enshrines the fifth Dalai statue. Behind the statue stand the pagodas which store the remains of famous monks. The pagodas contained an array of gold, silver and famous paintings. There is a tall bell tower located in the south. When the bell rings to tell the time at dawn, at noon and at dusk, you could hear it from 10 meters. The roof of the temple was paved with golden tiles. The tiles are shining and dazzling, resembling Buddha’s Halo.
You could take No. 3 bus at the Traffic Hotel in the Shangri-La County to get to the Gedan Songzanlin Temple. Or you can take the tourists bus, it only costs 2 Yuan. And you will spend 10 Yuan by taxi.
