Bita Sea Nature Reserve is situated in the east of Shangri-La County, 35 kilometers far from the county. The center of the nature reserve is Bita Sea. The eastern, southern, and northern sides are next to the Luoji Township; the western side borders on Jianjian Town. It is 60 kilometers long, 14kilometers wide. Its total area is 1418 hectares. In Tibetan, ‘Bita Sea’ means the place where is full of robur.

The Bita Sea Nature Reserve has a wide range of national high-level protected animals and plants. Among these there is a fish which is a legacy of the quaternary glacial period. Biologists called it ‘heavy lips fish’. It has tender meat and is very delicious. On the shores of the Bita Sea, a plenty of azaleas bloom. When the petals of azaleas fall into the sea, the ‘heavy lips fish’ would eat them. As the petals of azaleas contain traces of neurotoxins, the ‘heavy lips fish’ will be poisoned, floating on the water. This is the famous scenery – ‘azaleas drunken fish’.

The elevation of the sea is 3539 meters. The sea is about 3000 meters long, 700 meters wide. Its broadest point is 1500 meters and the narrowest point is about 300 meters. The average depth of it is 20 meters; the maximum depth is 40 meters. You could take bus from Zhongdian County to get there. The ticket price is 20 Yuan. Ride horse is another choice, but the best choice is on foot, as you could have an experience of crossing forest.
