The Museum of Hanzhong, opened as a public museum on November 9, 1958, is a comprehensive museum of local history among the Ten Museums of Shan Xi Province. All together the museum houses 12,000 items: 537 top rank items, 46 first class items, 85 second class items and 406 third class items. The most famous collections include the thirteen inscriptions of Stone Gate, the ancient Baoxie plank road, excavations from tombs, and celebrity calligraphy and painting, as well as a contemporary revolution theme exhibition.

Hanzhong Museum, built at the site of the ancient Han Palace, falls in line with traditional Han architecture themes. It consists of three yards gradually rising from south to north. The collections and exhibitions here have drawn the attention of historians throughout the world, especially the calligraphic works and inscriptions. The thirteen inscriptions of Stone Gate are labeled a “national treasure” and the model for Japanese inscribers. Ode to the Stone Gate and Inscription of the Stone Gate, though simple and unsophisticated, are presented in particularly natural and smooth strokes of high historical and artistic value.
