Seven kilometers east of the County of Yangshuo, visitors will find a prominent and towering tree known as the Big Banyan Tree. It has survived wind and rain over centuries since it was planted during the Sui Dynasty (581-618). It is also famous because the Chinese movie The Third Sister Liu was partly filmed here. The background of this beautiful love story adds a touch of magic to this centuries-old tree.

The Old Banyan, measuring seven meters in width and 17 meters in height, has experienced extensive growth over the years. Although its trunk is very old and its roots twisted, its branches and leaves stretch out so thickly that the sunshine hardly penetrates its canopy. It is under this tree that Third Sister Liu declared her devotion to her lover A’niu. In the movie, the Big Banyan of Yangshuo played witness to the eternal love between Sister Liu and A’niu.

The Big Banyan Tree Story

1.   The Big Banyan Tree

The Big Banyan Tree, aged over 1,400 years with its canopy covering 7.5km2, can be likened to a Chinese landscape painting full of artistic inspiration. Legend holds that the Big Banyan Tree witnessed the love between the Third Sister Liu and her beloved A’niu. Now, Big Banyan Tree has become a token of love, happiness and sweetness.

It is said Sister Liu, a famous singer of Guangxi Zhuang minority, asked Brother A’niu on a date to the Big Banyan. Sister Liu was secretly in love with Brother A’niu, expressing her affection through folk songs and singing her heart out to the night. But A’niu remained oblivious. Frustrated, Sister Liu asked him out to the Big Banyan Tree and threw him a red embroidered ball to make clear her feelings for him. But with A’niu lacking the nerve to catch the ball and accept her, Sister Liu begged the Big Banyan to persuade him. Then a miracle happened – Brother A’niu finally picked up the ball and accepted her love. The two are said to be living happily ever after, marking the spot as a legendary place for young couples to express romantic feelings for each other.
