It is enough of a challenge to remain safe in your own city, how about staying safe on your Travel to Beijing or on your Beijing Tour? You will be in a completely new city where you may not be able to speak the language?
- Tip 1) USE YOUR COMMON SENSE:
- Do not do anythingyou would not do at home, with this do everything you would do at home. For example, when using the London Underground you would ensure your bag is kept close to you at all times and zipped; as you would on the new york subway system. The same goes for the Beijing Subway system, be sure that your belongings are packed away safely and securely.

- Tip 2) DO NOT CARRY ALL YOUR CURRENCY AROUND WITH YOU AT ONE TIME.
- Some tourists prefer to use travellers cheques rather than actual money as they require I.D to spend. On the other hand however many tourists have had difficulty trying to exchange these on the weekend, as banks only convert travellers cheques Monday-Friday. Hence, if you do attempt you may be faced with several cashiers laughing at your request as they are not all familiar with travellers cheques. So save yourself the embarrassment and cash the cheques during the week.
- Tip 3) CARRY A ‘RESCUE CARD’ WITH YOU AT ALL TIMES:
- a rescue card can be issued from your hotel reception. You can simplyask them to write the address of the hotel in Chinese on a business-sized card which can be carried around in your wallet at all times. When hailing down a cab you can simply show the driver this card and they will drive you to your destination. Note that all taxis charge an extra 2.00RMB so do not be surprised when the taxi driver demands more than is shown on the metre, it is similar to a tip or service charge
- Tip 4) ALWAYS CARRY A MAP OF THE UNDERGROUND SYSTEM WITH YOU:
- despite the subway system being relatively straight forward, it is difficult especially in the ‘hustle and bustle’ of rush hour to locate a full view map. It is therefore advised that you at all times carry a subway map in your wallet/purse as the changing of lines and directions can become quite confusing especially with the masses of people travelling on this system. IT is also advised to laminate this map just in case of any spillages.
- Tip 5) A BOTTLE OF WATER IS ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY AT ALL TIMES:
- staying hydrated becomes a pleasure rather than a chore in such hot weather. It is important to stay hydrated in such humid weather and with water being the best hydrant it is recommended you carry if possible ,carry a 1.5 litre frozen bottle of water to last you throughout the day. If not, there are vendors in tourist hotspots selling frozen 0.5 litre bottles for a reasonable price.
- Tip 6) ONLY USE LICENSED TAXI’S:
- In Beijing it is probably safer to travel in unlicensed taxi’s than it is in your own country; however to be on the safe side only travel in licensed taxi’s. This way your cab can always be traced or tracked down in the event of an emergency.
- Tip 7) PACK A PHOTOCOPY OF YOUR PASSPORT:
- when packing your suitcase, be sure to pack a copy of your passport, just in case you happen to lose your actual passport. This will enable you to still fly home at the end of the trip.
-

- Tip 8 ) CLUBBING + CHEAP DRINKS = LEAVE VALUABLES AT HOME:
- we all love to reflect back on the memories created whilst travelling and sightseeing; however nights out could lead you to easily lose these things stored in devices such as Cameras. It is advisable to simply carry cash you need for the night and your room key and leave all other valuables at home. Clubs in China aswel as being cheap/free to enter, they are also very packed therefore making it easy to lose valuable. If you do wish to carry your camera or mobile phone with you be sure to back it up on your laptop/usb/email before you leave.
- TIP 9) BRING SEVERAL PAIRS OF COMFORTABLE FOOTWEAR:
- Like any city or country you are likely to do a fair amount of walking, especially when sightseeing. In this heat especially it is advisable to bring walking shoes, running trainers, flip flops and or sandals as inorder to properly explore the beautiful grounds of sights such as The Summer Palace you will need to do a generous amount of walking.
- TIP 10) BRING SUNSCREEN AND APPLY DAILY:
- It is important that whilst you are here you apply a generous amount of sunscreen daily. This will both protect your skin from the pollution and the sun. For those aiming to get a tan you can rest assured that it still is possible even when wearing sunscreen, just opt for the lower SPU lotions.
Overall Beijing is a very safe city with a lot to see and do; however do not forget these basic tips and enjoy your trip!
