When you think of a trip to China you rarely think of Guangzhou, even though it is the 3rd largest city in the country. This is because it is rather unspoilt compared to the other major Chinese cities of Shanghai and Beijing. It is located in the Guangdong province in southern China. The population of the city is 6 million which makes it the third most populous metropolitan area in China. The climate is humid subtropical, meaning that summers can be very wet with high temperatures, as it is monsoon season.

Cantonese is the dominant language for 7 million residents in Guangzhou, which is half of the total population. The other half mainly speak Mandarin however another language spoken there is Hakka.

One of the many things that Guangzhou has to offer is the beautiful traditional sculptures. This makes the province popular with Chinese visitors and foreign tourists alike. Some examples include the Guangzhou Ivory Carvings and sculptures made of jade, wood and olive. Other art work that can be found in the city is the colourful handmade pottery which has a history of over 300 years. Cantonese people are also famous for their skill to create intrigate embroidery called ‘Yue Embroidery.’ This literally translates to ‘Guangdong embroidery’ and is one of the four famous types of Chinese embroideries.

The religion practised in Guangzhou is predominantly Buddhism and has remained very influenial in the lives of the people there. Huaisheng Mosque is one of the most ancient mosques in the whole of China and is located in the city of Guangzhou.

One attraction which you must visit when on a trip to Guangzhou is the Temple of the Six Banyan Trees. This is an old Buddhist temple which was originally built in the Liang Dynasty in 537. Unfortunately the temple was burnt down however it was rebuilt in the Northern Sond Dynasty. The main part of the temple was built in 1097 and is known as the Flower Pagoda. It was named this because its exterior is bright and colourful. Originally the Flower Pagoda had a square base, however after being rebuilt after the fire it was made into an octagonal shape instead.

When visiting the Guangzhou area you must try the cured meat called the Canton Province Bacon. Wash this down with a Zhujiang Beer which gets it name because of the Pearl River which flows through the city.

Guangzhou is very unique and cannot be compared to any other major Chinese urban area. This is because Guangzhou is in a Southern province and therefore is predominately Cantonese. Cantonese culture is very different to that of any other area of China. The country of China is so vast that it cannot be categorised into one culture, one belief or one way of life.
