Fubo Hill Travel Tips

On July 19, 2011, in China Attractions, Guilin, Tours, Travel Info, by Jack Li

Fubo Hill (Wave-subduing Hill or Fubo General Hill) rises from the banks of the Lijiang River. Standing as an isolated peak, half on the land and half into the water, it disrupts the water flow and waves coming forward. That is where its name comes from. Another explanation says that the Hill was named in honour of Ma Yuan, a Fubo General (an ancient official position, for a general who overcame adversities) of Han Dynasty, who passed the hill on his way to conquer the South. In Tang Dynasty, there used to be a courtyard on the hill named after him. Now, there are places of interests such as Guishui Pavilion (Guishui is another name of Li River), Tingtao Pavilion (Pavilion to Listen to the Wave Sound), Banshan Pavilion (Mid-Hill Pavilion), Huanzhu Cave (Returned Pearl Cave), Shijian Stone (Sword Testing Stone), Qianfo Rock (Thousand Buddha Rock), Shanhu Rock (Coral Rock) and more. Apart from that, visitors can see an over 1000 kg “Qianren Wok” (Wok Used to Cook for a Thousand People) and an over 2700 kg heavy bell in the hill, casted under the order of King of Dingnan’s daughter, mourning after his death.

Best Time to Visit Fubo Hill

The beautiful mountains and clear water are at their best in summer and autumn (April to October), which are the best seasons to visit Guilin.

Fubo Hill Best Routes

1.There are three routes to the Fubo Hill peak:

The first one leads along the River, passes through the Xiuxi Corridor (Rest Corridor) and Fubo Corridor, where you can see the “Qianren Wok”. On the way you can visit the Jiming Teahouse and later the Dabei Acient Cave (Cave of Great Grief). At the end, the route passes near the Tingtao Pavilion (Pavilion to Listen to the Wave Sound).

The second route leads up the stairs along the west side of the Hill. The highlight of this route is a huge iron bell in the mountain pass. A series of flat steps above the Bell can be used to rest before the climb. Going up further, you can enjoy the beautiful view of half of the city from an observation deck near Banshan Pavilion. To reach the peak, follow the stone stairs.

Last but definitely not the least, tourists can choose to visit Huanzhu Cave (Returned Pearl Cave) and Shanhu Rock first, and then climb the the steps in the cave beside Shijian Stone to reach the top of the hill. This path will lead to Qianfo Rock, where hundreds of Buddha statues from Tang Dynasty are located.

2. For a more physically demanding route, start from the east. Walking through Fubo Corridor along the riverside you will reach the Tingtao Pavilion. The way from the Pavilion leads to the top of the hill, with Huanzhu Cave on the way. It is recommended to visit the cave on the way back – it will be a good place to rest after a climb.

3.Huanzhu Cave is the best part of Fubo Hill. Therefore the third route in “1” is the preferred choice if the time is limited.

4.Huanzhu Cave includes Shanhu Rock, Qianfo Rock and Shijian Stone as well as more than 400 Buddha statues and over 100 pieces of inscriptions, the most precious of which are: the self-portrait of Mi Fu, a well-known calligrapher and painter of the North Song Dynasty (960-1127), and a poem written by the South Song Dynasty (1127-1279) scholar Fan Chengda.
