When you book your China flights and travel to China, there are many wonders and delights that you should take advantage of. If you want to experience traditional Chinese culture then you should make sure you go and watch the Peking opera.

Peking opera is sometimes known as Beijing opera. It is a style of traditional Chinese theatre which makes dance, acrobats, vocal performance, music and mime combine to put on an amazing show.

This art form arose during the 18th Century and was fully recognised by the mid 19th Century. It was also extremely popular during the Qing Dynasty and is now regarded as one of the cultural treasure that China has to offer.

There are four main types of performers involved in Peking operas. It is the elaborate and vibrant costumes that make the performers the main focal point once they are on stage. The performers manage to exploit the skills of speech, song, dance and combat that are portrayed in a way that is both symbolic and suggestive, rather than realistic. The skill of the performer is ultimately analysed on the charisma of their movements and presence on stage. Performers stick to a selection of conventions in order to help the audience follow the plot of the story. The movements that the performers make have layers of meanings behind them which means that they must be in time with the music. The music within the Peking opera can be divided into two different style groups: the Xipi and the Erhuang. The main melodies include percussion patterns, arias and fixed-tune melodies. The collection of the Peking opera is thought to be over 1400 works now and these are all mainly based upon folklore, Chinese history and contemporary life.

In recent years, however, Beijing opera have made an effort to revamp the opera in order to try and increase audience numbers. They have tried to do so by improving the quality of performances, performing new and original plays and by attempting to adapt new performance elements. This has been met with mixed success.

So, make sure that you travel to Beijing and experience an old Chinese tradition of Peking opera.
