nd visit the famous Jingshan Park. Jingshan Park, also known as Coal Hill or Prospect Hill use to be a part of the Forbidden City until the walls were knocked down in the early 1900s, to make way for a road, which in turn destroyed several gates. The hill in Jingshan Park is in fact the earth that was removed in order to create the palace moat. When there, you must climb the hill, especially on a clear day, and take in the stunning views of the Forbidden City and Beijing of course.
If you are looking for magnificent views then make sure you go to the Pavilion of Everlasting Spring (Wanchun-ting) which is situated on the top of middle peak. This was at one stage the highest point in the city. Looking North and you will be able to see the Drum and Bell tower which is a traditional feature of old Chinese cities. Look slightly west and you will see two areas of water of the Shichahai and Beihai lake as they are intersected by Di’anmen Dajie. Glance South and the golden roofs of the Imperial Palace will be on the show to you as they stretch into the distance.
Prospect Hill was a private park that was only available for use by the emperor in the Yuan Dynasty (1279-1368). During the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) an artificial hill was constructed that consisted of five peaks which were assembled by using the earth that was dug out for to make a moat for the Imperial Palace.
This an old story that an emperor use to keep supplies of coal hidden away from others but keeping it under the hill, hence the other name Coal Hill (Meishan). Each peak found a pavilion had been built upon it, and this would be where five bronze Buddha’s would be placed. Four of these statues, however, were removed by the troops of the Allied Expeditionary Force. This was when they came to Beijing during the Siege of the Legations in 1900. The public were able to visit Prospect Hill from 1928 when it became available to everyone. It then became nominated as a park after 1949. The park can now be visited by anyone between the hours
of 6am and 8pm. There use to be an old tree (possibly cassia) situated on the eastern slop and this is where, supposedly, Chongzhen, the last emperor of the Ming Dynasty, hung himself in 1644.
Jingshan park is a must-see delight as it is simply beautiful and the view of Beijing is amazing, so go on book your China Flights today!
