As soon as you get off of your China flights and travel to Beijing, you will automatically notice the amount of markets, shopping centres and restaurants where you can spend your hard earned cash.
In the Dongzhimen district, conveniently situated next to the CYTS building, you will find one the many shopping centres available to you in Beijing: Raffles City Shopping Centre. It is meant to be the Beijing version of the Shanghai shopping centre. From the outside, Raffles (as it is more commonly shortened to) is a very modern looking building and the contemporary style continues on to the interior decor. This shopping centre will also accommodate for a number of themed events th
roughout the year. Currently, the Chinese New Year decorations are up, which includes a lot of red lanterns and rabbits!
Many westerns like Raffles as it does posses a taste of western lifestyle about it. Especially as it has household brands available such as Zara, H&M and many others. If you are tired or just fancy a break from haggling at the markets and don’t mind spending a little bit extra money then come to Raffles. Quality food is also readily available on two floors. The bottom floor is mainly for grabbing a quick snack. KFC and Subway are also obtainable. The bottom floor is mainly set up like a food hall and has a food market which is more like a mini supermarket. The top floor of Raffles has more of a variety of restaurants available, however, these restaurants are slightly more upper market and therefore, the price may be slightly higher. If you fancy a real taste of western desert then simply head to the Hagen Dasz shop to enjoy some delicious ice-cream.
If you fancy a nice relaxing day at raffles then I would head down there on a weekday. If you don’t mind the hustle and bustle of a busy weekend, just be prepared for long queues and a lot of pushing.
The closest subway station to Raffles is the Dongzhimen (South Street) which places you right outside of the shopping centre without having to cross any of the roads! On the other hand, as Raffles possesses a huge parking lot, driving could be a possibility.
