The Shanghai Bund (simplified Chinese: 外滩; traditional Chinese: 外灘pinyin: wài tān; literally “the Bund”) is also called the first road of Zhongshan east. It is located in the west of the Huangpu River. In the west of The Shanghai Bund, there are 52 buildings with different styles. For example, Rome buildings, Gothic buildings, European buildings and the buildings combined the characteristics of east and west. It is known as “the International Architecture Exhibition Group.” The Huang River is the largest river in the Shanghai District. The source of the Huangpu River is in the nature reserve of the Anji Longwang Mountain in Zhejiang. Because of the tide, the river has two times of obviously flood tide and ebb tide every day. The water level differences varies by 4 meters. The water level differences will drop more when meeting the astronomical tide. One hundred and fifty years ago, Shanghai was a little country in the south region of the Yangtze River. The shipping industry was under developed, people didn’t have ability to build the bund. Most of the river bank was not developed. At ebb tide, the water gathered in the center of the riverbed and formed a bund land. At flood tide, the water flooded the bund. The Huangpu River is the main river in Shanghai. As the river wide and water rushed, boat trackers had to pull boats against the direction of the river. Hundred of years ago, the tracks of boat trackers formed a winding path. People called it “pull boats’ road,” and this road is the earliest road in The Shanghai Bund. Shanghai’s native custom is for people to call it the “Li” instead of the river upstream, and “wai” instead of river downstream. The Huangpu River flowed through Lujia Bang and formed a turn and people use Lujia Bang as the boundary and call the upstream “Li Huangpu,” and downstream “Wai Huangpu.” The Bund of “Li Huangpu” also called “Li Bund,” and the bund of “Wai Huangpu” also called “Wai Bund.” It represents the scenery of Shanghai and is also an important tourist destination in Shanghai. After the 19th century, many foreign banks on the Shanghai Bund were known as the “Finance Street” or “East Wall Street.” The Bund had become a place of encouraging financial investment. Because of the rich historical value of the Bund, possessing a piece of land in the Bund is not only the symbol of wealth, but also the mark of honor.
