Beijing is becoming more and more international since the new century. Balinghou, the generation who born after 1980s, is creating their brand new life. Hit FM is a brand and programme under China Radio International, which is playing all international hits 24 hours on air. Music is becoming one of the elements for young people’s daily life. Midi Modern Music Festival is China’s largest rock musicfestival. Since its inauguration in 1997 it has been held each year in Beijing during the May holiday (May 1-3). The festival is hosted by the Beijing Midi School of Music.

The 2006 festival, held in Beijing’s Haidian Park, hosted 40-80 thousand visitors, and featured performances by more than 50 bands (including 18 foreign bands, such as Alev, Monokino, Yokohama Music Association, The Wombats, and The Mayflies) performing on four stages (Main Stage, Guitarchina Stage, Mini Midi Stage, and Disco Stage). The artists represented the genres of rock, electro, and DJ. The 2007 festival included UK acts the Crimea, Kava Kava (band), Dave Stewart of the Eurythmics, and Soundtrack Of Our Lives.

Over the past two weekends, Beijing played host to three major music festivals, showing the breadth of the Chinese music scene. Local independent music label Modern Sky put on the Strawberry Music Festival, which has an indie-rock bent featuring Chinese acts and a smattering of international bands. The Midi Festival, organized by Beijing’s Midi School of Music, has a more rock ‘n’ roll vibe, a punk- and metal-heavy lineup, and an eleven-year history. And the smaller Ditan Park Folk Festival was launched just last year by an independent promoter who also owns a guitar shop in Beijing.

The day broke gloriously on Saturday, May 1, the first real day of spring and the first day of the Strawberry Music Festival. Over the three-day festival in Tongzhou (an eastern suburb of Beijing), Chinese hipsters broke out their best outfits, sporting flowing skirts, floppy hats, and checkered shirts. Across six stages, bands ranged from student acts to the best of Chinese independent bands to heavy metal to former Super Girl contestants. (Modern Sky founder Shen Lihui was also a judge on the TV singing competition Super Girl.

Despite of rock, pop music, Beijing is entirely new for all new comers, especially for the youth. As the sun rises Beijing is already a bustling metropolis, but in the dim glow of the moon the city is transformed. After a day of taking in the sights, many visitors find that a night on the town lends a whole new experience of China culture. Beijing has an extremely active nightlife scene and there are numerous choices of places to unwind. Sanlitun barstreet is popular among tourists and expats and is guaranteed to be busy, providing swanky clubs and numerous western restaurants. If you want to relax in the new trendy hotspot then try the Houhai bar street. This lakeside area is filled with terraces perfect for a drink while reflecting on the day. If you are looking to rub elbows with the locals thenLuoguxiang barstreet is where you want to be. Here you can enjoy a beer in a Siheyuan (customary dwellings in Beijing) and bask in the traditional atmosphere. If your feet are not up for an evening out in Beijing, consider relaxing at the spa. Sanlitun is an area of theChaoyang District, Beijing containing many popular bar streets and international stores. The area has been under almost constant regeneration since the late 20th century as part of a city-wide project of economic regrowth. It currently houses many bars and clubs popular with both expatriates and locals as well as international brand-name stores such as American Apparel, Apple and Adidas. It is notable for housing the largest Adidas store in the world. The Ya Show market is also in the area, a popular destination for tourists wishing to buy counterfeit clothes.

Sanlitun’s bar street is extremely popular for expatriates and young foreign teenagers to blow off steam, party and drink. They have many bars which have a variety of cheap liquor and fun dance areas. The clubs street of Beijing is a 15min taxi ride away. The main source of underage drinking is from the expat teens from all over the world who indulge in the ability to drink underage without anyone asking for id or checking their age. The nightlife for underage teens is frequently quite unrestricted compared that in the home countries of the foreign teens living as expats in Beijing.
