Trip Advice for a Long Journey

On September 9, 2010, in Tips&Ideas, Tours, Travel Info, by Huang Xiaoyan

When my friend James came from the U.S. for his China Tours, he can’t wait to get to the Shanghai Expo. As a student living in Beijing, I have never been to Shanghai in my whole life. I don’t want to get lost in one of the biggest cities in the world. I was thinking what I should do. One of my good friends suggested us to go there with a group through a travel agency. So I did that to make sure everything would be in track during our Shanghai tours.

At the beginning, I didn’t expect too much from the group because I thought we may have to sacrifice our own time on looking something that we may not be very interested. However, after we finish our long trip from Beijing to Shanghai, James told me that this was the best time he had ever had in China. It was convenient, efficient and the most important thing is that we had learnt a lot about the attractions.

Low Price. Compare with going out by ourselves, travel with a group would be much cheaper. For example, the travel agency can always get the tickets for a much lower price. The second biggest part is the hotel. While the travel agency can not only save you a lot of trouble finding a good hotel, the price is also not too expensive. In this way, we save about half the price.

Low Carbon Consuming. Since we go to see those places of interests on a big bus with about another 50 people, comparing with independent traveling by ourselves, we are releasing less pollution to the environment. If we could do anything to protect our living place, why not?

Trouble Saving. Since we were not familiar with the city of Shanghai, we can’t do anything by ourselves. While our bus took us to all the places that we could think of. For example, James wanted to get some gifts for his family and friends, it was lucky that one of our stops was at the Old City God’s Temple in Shanghai. After we got there, James was so happy that he got a lot of good deals and what he wants. Another thing about this was the Expo. I heard that some private tourists have to get up at 2am or even 1am to get the tickets for the Chinese pavilion. While we only had to get up at 6am and we got the opportunity to get into the Chinese pavilion because of the reservation through the travel agency.

Friendly Tour Friends. During our trip, James and I had made a lot of new friends. We always talk to the people in the bus, sharing with each other the interesting part in our trip. We talked a lot and later we became good friends. Some of them even asked us to travel to their cities. It was so interesting! We still keep in touch even after our tour. Those friendly people are also part of our memories.

Efficient Travel Routes. As we all know, the travel agency would arrange the travel routes for the tourists. Those routes are very tight so that they can take us to many different places within a short time. Added by the explanations from the tourist guide, we could see a lot and learn a lot. For example, during our Hangzhou trip, we had been to the West Lake, the Lingyin Temple, a garden, a silk market and a tea house. During this trip, our tourist guide had explained a lot of knowledge about those different places. In this way, we were getting familiar with the history of this city and this is the very goal.

This was such a good experience. We would like to do it again—Travel to Shanghai.
