The Weird and The Wonderful

If you are planning a visit to Beijing this year, then the world’s famous Wangfujing Night Market is a must. Here you will find literally everything from fried ice-cream to grilled dog.
The market stalls are all located conveniently next door to one another, with each stall desperate for your attention/custom. Once you have chosen your ‘poison’, you will see your food being cooked right in front of you over a hot grill (each meal usually takes around 1-4 minutes to cook).

A real delicacy is the Scorpion ranging from 15RMB to 50RMB; this ‘snack’ will give you a true taste of a predatory arthropod. This crispy cuisine is a customer favourite and really is like nothing you’ve tasted before. The real hardcore eaters amongst you should pass the scorpion taste with flying colours; getting onto some real fiendish foods. My personal ‘hardcore hit’ has to be the sheep’s penis and testicles. Priced together at 40RMB, you will really get a taste of which you have never and probably will never taste again. Other slightly subdued foods include: cockroach, shark, snake, eel and many other weird and wonderful creatures and critters.

…And for Dessert?

If you want to try something tasty at the night market, then be sure to try the fried ice cream, hot on the outside and cold in the middle this truly is a refreshing way to wash down the unusual foods which you have just tasted. If you fancy something a tad more commercial then be sure to check out the oversized Haagen-Dazs, situated south of the market stalls. Get any ice-cream you want here, as well as all sorts of yummy cakes.

Be sure to check out the Wangfujing market regardless of whether you wish to try out any exotic foods as other ordinary foods, such as Chuanr (meat kebabs, commonly made of lamb) and desserts, such as Tang Hu Lu, or candied fruits make up the majority of the food sold on the street. Be sure not to miss this great opportunity by turning down a trip of as lifetime with the China Travel Depot.
