Some American friends come to China for tourism, such as Travel to Beijing or Travel to Shanghai, they will pay attention on some information about US embassy in China. Here are some services they provide for American citizens. 
Civil service is open for public from 8:30 am to 12:00 am and 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm in Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. On Wednesday, it is open only from 8:30 am to 12:00 am
You should pay attention that when coming to the US embassy, you should take some necessary certifications, such as passport, ID card and driver card.
Because US embassy do not admit to take any e-products, so all materials and photos should be prepared in paper form. Besides, US embassy’s space is limited, so you had better not carry any large baggage such as backpack and suitcases.
The main responsibility of US embassy is to provide relevant services to American citizens in China. The services include passport updating, birth registration and so on. The citizens department also helps US citizens to receive welfare of the federal government, which includes assisting notarization, taxes, voting and travel registration and so on.
You can apply different projects in one day but you have to make reservation for every project. You have to print the reservation confirming information or save it in your computer.
American citizen service is providing help for American citizens who are in emergency. For example, American citizens are facing problems such as poverty, being arrested, separating from younger children or even in medical needs. If they are in America, please dial 011-8610-85314000 for help; If in China, please dial 010-85314000.
The US civil service is not open in holidays of both Chinese and American’s.
US civil service needs reservation with them in advance. You can make appointments on line if you want to apply any service from them.
The must booking projects are included, updating passport, reissuing passport, adding passport pages, applying for passports of newborns, birth registrations overseas and some supplementary materials and notarization of single certification for marriage registration.
All application forms are needed fill on line and printed. No signing on forms.
If you are an American citizen and want your passport issued in mailing, you can make it through China Postal. But if updating passports, you have to submit your application and your previous passport will logout.
You can choose whether mail your passport or not, China Postal will charge for it. The service is limited in China mainland.
Requirement：if you choose the postal service, you have to provide your detailed address in Chinese when you are filling in passport applications. China postal do not accept any address written in English. Besides that China Postal will not put your mails on your doorway or in your mailbox, so please make sure someone will sign up the mails when they are sent to the address.
Please arrive in US embassy 15 minutes in advance so that embassy has enough time to take necessary security checks then lead you to civil service. If you are late more than 15 minutes the reservation will be cancelled. The applicants should rebook on line.
If you want to apply passports updating or pages adding, please fill in application form on lime and print it.

If you are going to make a reservation to give up the United States’ nationality, and you are US citizen living in Beijing, you have to make reservation with citizen department firstly then meet with consular officials.
