Singer, songwriter Katie Melua once famously recorded a song which peaked at number five in the UK single charts called “Nine Million Bicycles in Beijing”. The song according to Melua was inspired by a conversation with an interpreter during a trip to the city, the interpreter claimed that there are allegedly nine million bicycles in Beijing. On the performers return Melua and her manager, Mike Batt, inspired by the conversation created the single which turned out to be the artists first top ten hit in the United Kingdom.
To explore Beijing on one of its nine million bicycles consider one of the following pedal powered options.
1. On Your Bike
Set your own itinerary by heading to Beijing Bicycle Rental Co Ltd. Situated outside numerous underground stations, predominantly Lines Two and Five, those who are so inclined can hire some wheels for approximately Y20 a day, shorter hire terms are available. A Y400 deposit and Y100 service charge are required, both are refunded on return of the bike after 24 hours. Alternatively some budget hotels in the city hire bicycles for approximately Y20 a day. Bicycle theft is a common problem in Beijing therefore cyclists should consider investing in a lock(s) for their bicycle as a precaution.
2. Sights From The Saddle
For those who prefer an established itinerary while exploring Beijing by bicycle check out Biking Planet which organize a wide range of sight seeing adventures by bicycle in and around Beijing. From the hutongs to the great wall these guy’s have it covered. Alternatively try Bike Beijing or Bicycle Kingdom for alternative itineraries.
3. Rickshaw
A rickshaw allows you to experience Beijing by bicycle and not have to do all the work. This traditional mode of transport has been used in China since the late 1800′s. Rickshaw’s are available to hire throughout the city and tend to be easily hailed outside most major tourist attractions in the city. Remember ALWAYS to negotiate a fare with the driver prior to hiring a rickshaw as you may end up paying more than you should!
