
Houhai lake in central Beijing is surrounded by a cluster of bars and restaurants which although open during the day really come alive after dark creating a vibrant socialising district for locals and visitors alike. The area has been described as a mix of the modern west married with old Beijing situated between the lakes of Xihai and Ouanhai. For an insight into the flavours that inspired Chinese cuisine just wander into any of the waterfront establishments serving local dishes. To enjoy Houhai at its best arrive just before dusk and watch the evening sun reflect on the lake as it sinks then marvel at the twinkling lights reflecting on the water.

If you prefer to eat off dry land take to the waters on one of Houhai’s decorative boats or grab some street food and hold on tight as a rickshaw negotiates you through the surrounding streets. Disembark and wander along the west side of Houhai lake and stroll into some tastefully decorated boutiques selling iconic Chinese souvenirs alongside handmade arts and crafts.
