Have you ever try to climb the steepest Great Wall in winter? For most adventure tourists, having this trip to China Jiankou Great Wall is a tempting one in China Tours especially Beijing Tours. Since I am studying in Beijing, travel to rural area is my essential entertainment for certain time. I took this adventure tour just a few days ago. And here I will share my own experience to you.

Before I went there, I had collected some information about it. The most important one was the weather there at that day. The weather forecast said it would be a high windy day in Beijing. However, considered the long distance from city center, I imaged a low even no wind in the rural area. But the high speed wind on the Great Wall showed me wrong. So you’d better get clear about the exact location’s weather condition. Because high wind, rain and so on bad weather can be huge obstacles to this trip. And certainly, I took this trip with some friends. One of them has very wide experiences in climbing and worked as our team leader. He also offered walkie- talkies to us. And one of them was responsible for food especially cooked meat as supplement for our body energy. Other preparation could be basic clothing and footwear which are suitable for climbing. By the way, you’d better wear bright colored coat or hat for safety.

After simple preparation, we started from school in North 4th Ring Road. And it took us about 2 and a half hours to the destination, west side of Mutianyu Great Wall in Huairou area. We parked the car at the foot of the mountain. There are so many farm houses providing kinds of rainbow trout dinner. And we planned to have a nice dinner there as a celebration for climbing. Before starting climbing, our team leader told us his scheduled time table—about 2 hours to climb up the Jiankou Great Wall (we started at 10a.m.), about 1 hour to walk along the Great Wall and enjoy the beauty of scenery and 2 hours to come back to the parking square. And facts showed that the timetable was almost right.

We started along the mountain road with local houses by the side. And we encountered a zealous old man. He suggested us that there was no tickets charged in Jiankou but another local man would charge about 5yuan per one at the wooden ladder. It is on the most dangerous rock point, after climbing over that is the Great Wall. Besides, he gave us two large ripe persimmons for taste. Oh, it was so delicious that I never ever tasted one like that before. By the way, Huairou teems with persimmons and chestnuts. (About 2 hours later we saw the charging man on the other end of wooden ladder, and we finally gave him 10yuan for us 4 people together.) During the climbing up time, we crawled on all fours at precipitous place and used alpenstocks for saving energy. Unlike mounts I climbed before, this mountain has many rocks needed climbing over. It was exciting for me. We moved fast at the beginning then slowed down little by little. And we girls needed minutes rest times at the latter hour. We also eat some meat and drink hot water when resting. You feel warm even hot when climbing but cold and so windy when resting. It was a little troublesome to me. But swearing a lot for a time in winter is very good for health. And that feeling made me good will.

The most worthy mentioned part is the process on the Great Wall. We crawled on all fours again and again and finally got on the road in Great Wall. Wind speed there was so high that it could almost wind me up. We kept down when wind up or leaned to one side facing wind. Once wind stopping, we took grand views of the ir-rebuilt walls, endless skies, tall mountains, peaceful villages at the mount foot. What a splendid painting and what tiny human! We took many photos for memory, though we were almost frozen under the huge wind.

We returned by the way we came up. It was a little faster on the mountain road but slower when down the Great Wall. And when we arrived at mountain foot, I whipped round for the far away Great Wall, felt immensely gratifying. And roast rainbow trout, braised pork with brown sauce and Chinese chestnut were pretty tasteful in Yushifu Restaurant.

If you have enough time to Travel to Beijing, and if you are adventure tourists, I strongly recommend this trip to you.
