Travel in Reading, Private Bookstores in Beijing

On November 2, 2010, in Beijing, Cool Places, by Zhu Liuliu

I believe most travelers love reading, because reading can broaden one’s vision as much as traveling can. This is clearly expressed by an old saying “reading ten thousand books equals traveling ten thousand li”. In my view, we can learn more if we combine reading with traveling. This is something like combing theory with practice. Today I will introduce some private bookstores in Beijing for anyone who likes reading. Travelers on Beijing Tours can also go to these bookstores as they are also the cultural sites of Beijing. You’ll learn more about Beijinger’s food for thought during your China Tours.

1. Sanwei Bookstore

Opened in 1988, Sanwei Bookstore is the earliest and most influential bookstore in Beijing. Its name is borrowed from one article of Luxun the great writer which is titled as “From Baicaotang to Sanwei Bookstore”. Although it has nothing to do with Luxun’s article, it became a cultural landmark in 1980s. Activities such as lectures, mini-concerts and folk cultures exchange are often held in this bookstore.

Address: No.20, Fuxingmen Neidajie

2. Trends Lounge

This bookstore is very different from the traditional bookstores. It aims to become the most beautiful bookstore in China. The whole bookstore is full of artistic air. The curved shelf with fashion magazines from various countries on it, small and special handicrafts beside the books, comfortable sofa and clean French windows will make you much relaxed. Here it is more than books. This bookstore provides a multi-functional space for exhibitions, lectures, plays, movies and taking photos.

Address: the 2nd floor Shimao Tianjie Beilou

3. All Sages Bookstore

All Sages Bookstore was opened in 1993. It is the first academic bookstore in Beijing. It provides books about humanity, social science, classics, dictionaries, art, literature, music and management. It is an optimal place for scholars and intellectuals. One specialty of this bookstore is that it includes Thinker’s Café Bar for readers to exchange ideas.

Address: Building 5, Lanqiying, Chengfu Road.

4.  One Way Street Library

This bookstore got its name from the German thinker Benjamin. It intends to provide a public space for intelligence, thought and culture. The main body of the bookstore used to be a gallery. Now it has a courtyard covering more than 200 square meters. Readers can read their books sitting in the soft sofas in the courtyard and feeling the warmness of sunlight. It is a peaceful place for deep thinking.

Address: Building 11, Blue Bay.

5.  The Bookworm

Unlike other bookstores, Bookworm is more popular among foreign friends. Maybe it is because it is located in Sanlitun Road where there are a lot of bars. As the introduction on its website says, the Bookworm is a bookshop, library, bar, restaurant and events space. So it is also multi-functional. If you want to experience a westernized bookshop, you can go there.

Address: Building4, Nan Sanlitun Road.

6. Kubrick

Kubrick Bookstore is a brand of Hongkong Kubrick Bookstore. The whole bookstore is in green. Books are stored in green cells on the shelf. There are no tags for classification of the books. However, books of the same group are put close to each other. So, it’s easy for you to find books.

Address: North area of MOMA, Wanguocheng.

With these bookstores in mind, you can enrich your life very well. Besides, these bookstores also reflect the cultural life of Beijingers. So, don’t forget to go to one of these places during your Travel to Beijing.
