When you’re on your China Tours don’t forget to pick up some fresh fruit from the local supermarket and store them in your fridge or take them with you. This is always a good nutritional and healthy snack for when you get hungry.    Buy bottled water for your China Hotels.  It is known that water from the tap is not fresh in China.  I tend to buy bottled water usually as I much prefer the water.  It also has a fresher taste and cooler if you store it in the fridge.  Bottles of water can be bought in many convenience stores and supermarkets.  You can also stock up on food for storage aswell.

The supermarkets in China have had initial success in packaged foods such as frozen foods, refrigerated foods, tin foods and dry foods such as rice, flour and even cooking oil.  The produce in China is a little different from the supermarkets in the west.  Usually a lot of the time if you’re in China you will want to stay at your hotel and grab something quick and easy.

The supermarkets in China don’t sell much convenience foods.  For example: Microwaved meals which is majorly marketed and encouraged in the UK.  Instead China supply packeted noodles.  Similar to ‘pot noodles’ the noodles here are sold in larger pots.  Just add hot boiling water and add the ingredients to make the noodles more flavourable.  The noodles are a lot thicker and the ingredients are a lot heavier hence, making the noodles a lot tastier.   These noodles make a delicious meal if you add meat or vegetables to the dish.

If you like potato chips (or crisps as they call it in the UK) the supermarkets in China sell ‘Lays’ which are an American Brand and are similar to the ‘Walker’ style crisps.  You can also buy ‘ Pringles’ but are a different style and texture.. You can also buy Waffles, UFO potato crisps, VF Sweet potato crisps and many more which are a produce in China.  The flavours are very different.  They are not like the simple flavours you would buy in the UK such as cheese and onion, salt and vinegar and plane flavoured crisps.  They are more like Lemon flavoured, Chicken flavour, classic flavour, tomato flavour and many exotic flavours.  Many of the Chinese eat dried fruits such as mango, dates and nuts as a supplement for a snack.

Lays Crisps

The chocolate here is very similar to what you would buy in the UK such as Cadburys, Sneaker bars and Dairy Milk.  They also have their own produce of chocolate.  If you like cheese there is a selection of processed cheese or fermented cheese.  Unfortunately they don’t have the good old English cheddar in these supermarkets.  This trend is found with most of the produce in China for example the vegetables.  They don’t sell the same vegetable types in China like they do in the UK such as Coli flour, sprouts, Beetroot, carrots, cabbage etc instead sell vegetables such as cabbage called Baocai and carrots which are called Huluobu, caihua, wawacai, xiqinbaihe and many more.

The Chinese are not lazy when it comes to cooking and obviously the supermarkets in China cater for the home cooking.  But it’s really intruiging to differentiate the foods from the west.  For example you can buy a boiled duck egg for a snack.  They also sell lychees, lamb testicales, scorpion, cat, sea horses, slugs.  Many of these foods are found fried on local market stalls. The supermarkets also sell many international branded foods such as kellogs, Nestle and Danone Milk, Hormel sausages and hot dogs hence, the Chinese have many foods which cater to meet consumer demand which leave China in a very competitive market.

They even sell exotic products just to get consumers in the door.  However with business booming in China and the growing middle class they have the purchasing power to buy a lot of imported foods from places all over the world such as Asia, America, Oceana and Europe leaving supermarkets such as Lianhua and Hualian developing quickly and catering for consumer needs.  Many of the supermarkets in China sell wine, deodorant, makeup, cleaning products so are a great convenience.  Some of the supermarkets are quite small and local such as the Wal mart and Carrifour these supermarkets are just as convenient making your shopping experience a lot easier.

So when you’re in China you really got to see it for yourself so check out china travel and be prepared for your stay in China.
