If you are lucky enough to be in Beijing in the winter you will be able you enjoy the month long red leaf festival, that happens at fragrant hill from the 15th of october to the 15th of November. Throughout this time if you visit the park you will be treated to a vast array of flaming red Maple and Sumac trees which are scattered all over Fragrant Hill and other near by hills. It is a stunning view and worth the visit I would definitely recommend it. If you would like to know more about this festival and others like it look at Beijing Tours or If you want to learn about getting around china check out china travel. The reason for the change in colour is due to the dramatic drop in the temperature which makes the leaves change to a beautiful fiery red which can be seen for miles! Fragrant hill is actually a large forest park which includes 395 acres of traditional chinese architecture including the Zhao temple and an idyllic lake, It is also over 1000 years old.
Once inside the park there is an option to either trek to the top or take the slightly more relaxing option of the cable car to the summit, however the queue can often take over an hour. The hill at its highest point is a whopping 557 meters so I would suggest if your not that athletic to take the cable car as the steps can be a bit uneven and difficult to climb at points. It costs 10 RMB to go inside the park and this includes the cable car ride up and back down again, I would suggest putting aside a good few hours to explore the park fully you could easily spend the whole day going round and up and down there are so many brilliant things to see.
The Park is situated on the western outskirts of the city which is quite a long way out from central Beijing and there are no near by Subway stations it is possible to get the Subway as far as Bagou and then take a bus the remainder of the way. When the Red leaf festival is taking place expect large crowds which inevitable lead to extra traffic and angry taxi drivers! Its very difficult to get a cab from outside and can involve a long walk this due to the volume of people the same goes for buses they often are packed and wont stop to pick new passengers up.
