Jialing River: its drainage area is the largest one in the Yangtze River’s largest tributary.
The Three Gorges Dam is in the middle section of the Xiling Gorge at Sandouping, 44km upstream from the city of Yichang. It is the world’s largest hydro-electric power station that traverses the Yangtze River aimed both at harnessing the power of the Yangtze to create hydroelectric power and controlling the river to prevent flash flooding that historically caused a great deal of damage. The huge project took 17 years starting from 1994 to 2009 with total investment of 180 billion Yuan RMB and rural-urban migration of one million people.
