The Three Gorges Dam is in the middle section of the Xiling Gorge at Sandouping, 44km upstream from the city of Yichang. It is the world’s largest hydro-electric power station that traverses the Yangtze River aimed both at harnessing the power of the Yangtze to create hydroelectric power and controlling the river to prevent flash flooding that historically caused a great deal of damage.
