Xi’an, as one of the Top 4 ancient city in the world (the others are Athens, Cairo and Rome), surely has the most places of interest. No matter the Qin Dynasty or Tang Dynasty, they have their historic remaining sites in Xi’an. So it is the must-to-go place for foreigners when having china travel. Here I will give you some advices about the DIY Xi’an Tours.

I just plan a 6 or 7 days trip for Xi’an. And the following are the arrangement for each day.

The first day—travel inner the city

As you have just arrived there, it is a good choice for you to have this easier line. And the regular places include Bell Tower, Shaanxi history museum, Forest of steles, etc. Here I suggest the museum, Big Wild Goose Pagoda and its North Plaza, Hui streets and Xi’an Circumvallation as the must-to-go places.

Shaanxi History Museum, known as “Huaxia Treasury” and “magnificent temple of Chinese civilization”, surely could be the most representative one compared with other museums in Shaanxi Province. So if you have visited this museum, there is no necessary to visit the others. And Shaanxi history museum is now free with daily 3000 complimentary tickets which begin to give out at eight o’clock in the morning. You will see unearthed precious artifacts thousands of years ago in Shaanxi Province. By the way, it is necessary to follow a guide to illustrate the history of treasures so that you can understand things there more exact. But as there are so many touring parties, it is wise and easy to follow them with no formal join.

Big Wild Goose Pagoda, A masterpiece of architectural art of Chinese Tang Dynasty Buddhist, used to store the Buddhist Scriptures from India brought by Xuanzang. It has been famous since Tang Dynasty. It is also a well-known landmarks and monuments in the ancient city of Xi’an. And in its North Plaza, there is the largest music Fountain in Asia. It is the most important square of Tang Culture in China. You’d better go there at night for its largest lamplight fountain.

p.s.   Musical Fountain Show Time:

Monday to Friday: 12:00, 20:00.

Saturday and Sunday: 12:00, 14:00, 16:00, 18:00, 21:00

Winter (November to next January) generally does not show, except the New Year.

Hui Streets is famous for both its delicious local food and profound cultural connotation. Xi’an north courtyard, one of the Hui Streets, is an important paving for Muslim areas. Food or other objects there are all operated by Muslim. It has strong Islamic features, which is deeply loved by foreign tourists.

Xi’an Ancient Circumvallation includes a moat, drawbridge, gate building, watchtower and a series of Embrasure military facilities; constituted a tightly integrated military defense system. To visit the ancient city wall of Xi’an, you can get a specific image of ancient wars and know more about urban construction and architectural arts. Well, wall at nightfall is very beautiful, especially where few people, you can wander in the very broad sense of the ancient city walls, because there is no shade above facilities.

Forest of steles is known as Chinese calligraphy meets land. It has collected thousands of pieces of calligraphy of famous ancient inscriptions and also known as the Museum of Chinese calligraphy inscriptions. And people who knows Calligraphy well can be crazy here while who doesn’t can be crazy opposite.

The second day—eastern line

Spots in eastern are dense and transportation there is very convenient, so there is no need for you to join a touring party. And Bus NO.306 (Tour 5) which is in the China Post Office opposite the railway station can get through all most eastern spots. And the price is 5 yuan one-way and 8 yuan round trip fare (you can get on and off at random among the attractions and no taking times limits). Besides its operating hours is 8:00 am – 6:00 pm. You can get chartered car for 80-150 yuan..

Well, the famous Terra Cotta Warriors, Qin tomb, Huaqing hot spring and Ban Po Village Remains are in the eastern line. Obviously, you must visit Terra Cotta Warriors.

p.s. Tickets: 65 yuan off-season price, 90 yuan the peak season price and students with IDs can get half-fare tickets. Disabled card holders with disabilities pay half price. 16 years of age and 65 years old ones with ID card get free of charge.

As to Huaqing hot spring, if you do not have enough, just overlook it. If you are interested in matriarchy, you should visit the Ban Po Village Remains.

The third day—western line

As attractions there are scattered and the traffic is not convenient, it is better for you to hire a car or participate in some touring parties. Taxi for round trip charges 400 yuan and private car for you is 200 yuan. And tour buses are available at the railway station, the price will be paid according to the entrance ticket that you bought. And it would be wise to get some food in advance as there is few places for meals and the place arranged by guides could be expensive.

Famen Temple and Qian Tomb are recommended to visit on the western line. Remember Famen Temple prohibits taking photos. And Qian Town which is 3km away from Qian Tomb has the three cut-off food—Guokui, Guamian and tofu jelly. You may have a taste.

In addition, Hua Mountain could take a day trip and Hukou waterfall, Mausoleum of Yellow Emperor and Yan’an can consist of your northern line which may take you 2days trip.

As referred above, your integrated Travel to Xi’an could take almost a week. And the info above is for your reference only.
